Why was I right to think that this apparently quite popular Toyota Hilux was a pick-up...

Interesting.  Most interesting is that the NAFTA produces such abysmally few cars.

That's not the Toyota Hilux they're specifically referring to...

These are them (with assorted similar ones). It's convenient because it's hard to destroy and you can stick your anti-tank missile/AA gun/machine gun on top of it to take out vehicles of your enemy government/warlord/militia. It's popular in countries where it's useful, like Somalia, Iraq, Niger, etc.

Yes, that's notably why I had thought about a pick-up...

For an eventual presence of the more luxurious version, like portrayed in my pic, I had also envisaged humanitarian/UN cars...

There's many more militia/warlord/government troops than there are UN peacekeepers or humanitarian workers.

Well, I'd also imagine so, thus the 'eventual'. And well, we speak about sold cars here, which would mean new cars, then UN and the like people would be more inclined to buy new stuffs, legally, in stores, than all the guys pictured above.

Yes this is a shame.

Its globalization/'free trade'.  If there were a mighty tariff wall things would be different.

Top Gear has proven several times the Toyota Hilux is effectively indestructible. Survived wrecking balls, complete submersion in ocean water, and even a fall from the roof of an exploding skyscraper. They also drove the newer model to the North Pole and across the lava floe of an active Icelandic volcano. So yeah, no wonder a truck so rugged is the most popular vehicle throughout most of Africa.

Yes, around here Japanese cars dominate, though other Japanese products less so, and Korea is huge now both in products and in cultural influence.  There are a few Ford and Chevrolet cars here now, and quite a lot of trucks.. reasonably successful but only similar to a Mazda, Nissan, or Mitsubishi - they don't touch Toyota or Honda.

Really Thais tend to follow-the-leader on major purchases - they tend not to like to be the person to take a risk to buy anything unusual which might prove problematic or have a poor re-sale value (in general cars here have a very high re-sale value, so ensuring getting this back is a major portion of the purchase decision).

Interesting map but yeah looks like they missed about 10million cars for NAFTA.

I'd love to see one of these with large commercial aircraft sales- Boeing, Airbus, Embraer, the Russian conglomerate. Of course, that is complicated in that many airlines are multinational.

At least eighty percent of the cars on the road here in Dhaka are Toyotas.
