Observation: Gymnastics is incredibly strange, and the more you think about it the stranger it is.

So many swimming upsets. BBC commentators wondering how Missy Franklin was going in this race, and she wins it.

Apparently she is 100% ethnically Canadian. That is, both of her parents were born here.

Apparently, whenever there's no Canadian involved in an event, Canadian TV focuses on whatever American has even a vaguely plausible connection to Canada. That amuses me.

It's still hard to believe that happened 120 times in a year, even though I saw it.

NBC's really overselling these American gymnasts. By the end, I was far more interested in what would happen to the Russians than anything else.

Just saw the women's all-around final, and I have to say that these judgy people are unfair.

Yeah, I think Raisman was better than the Russian who placed third.

I thought both of the Russians were great, although it didn't look like they were trying as hard to get the little things right, which hurt them.

Shooting is the only thing that Bangladesh has ever medalled in at the Commonwealth Games, so naturally I am all for it.

US vs. Italy in women's water polo. Who is Phil for?

Water polo is actually a pretty entertaining sport, unlike most that are so popular in the US (like what Americans call football.)

You're American, dude. It's called football because it is football.

Water polo fascinates me in that I could never hope to do it (I tried fooling around with a water polo ball in the pool once and it did not go well), but so much of the action happens underwater that it's almost impossible to watch.

Really football is a sport played by kicking around a ball. What Americans call football is a sport that primarily consists of throwing or carrying an object that isn't a ball.

No, football is a game played on foot (as opposed to a game played on horseback).

FOX should be the Olympic affiliate for the US, and CBC should be for Canada. I wonder why this hasn't happened?

More seriously, NBC has chosen to market itself as the network of the Olympics and spend the bucks to do it.  FOX hasn't, nor does it have ready access to enough additional national channels to put comparable Olympics coverage on.  ABC/ESPN/Disney is a possibility.  Imagine an Olympic logo in which the lop left and top right rings morph into Mickey's ears.

A FOX Olympics would be impossibly bad. I'll pass on Joe Buck and Tim McCarver doing the Olympics, thanks.
