lol indeed. This is awesome. Do we know what specific event caused the takeover of the U.S. government under Ulysses S. Grant in 1871?

The passage of "An Act To Provide A Government for the District of Columbia" (16 Stat. at L. [181 U.S. 453, 458] 419, chap. 62), via gross misinterpretation of this clause describing the home-rule authority of the city's new municipal government:

Also, it apparently becomes incredibly very super serious business because the act references "THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" rather than "The Constitution for the united states of America" like it's worded in the original document. As we all know, changing the capitalization of a single phrase and saying "of" instead of "for" has serious legal ramifications that can totally lead to the spontaneous creation of an entirely new form of government.
