If the south is completely behind one candidate in a close election, then by definition the other candidate will win the overwhelming majority of the other states, so this really shouldn't be surprising.

Just for the record taking out whyterain's southern states from the EV total leaves you with Obama at 331 and Mccain at 61. Again in a close election where one side sweeps the south the other side must ,by default, win the vast majority of the north.
