OK, guys, I think I've figured out a name for my ideology. What about: neoliberalism?

Hmmm...half libertarian eco-socialism (in other words, run by worker/consumer co-operatives rather than government), half Keynesian social democracy.

In practice, my worldview is usually that of a pragmatic progressive/realistic liberal.

However, I judge policies based on their merits, not whether they are "centre-right" or centre-left", so I might describe myself as non-ideological.

Isn't that a bit of an oxymoron?

So is the concept the Third Way. Didn't stop Cinton and Blair winning elections.

Anyway, I suppose it sounds a bit of an oxymoron, as I wouldn't describe it as a pure libertarian ideology, just taking the good aspects. My view is that government needs to create a flat income tax rate and abolish business and inheritance taxes, as well as ending redistributionist social programs that cost far too much money, and tend to engender poverty. However, I also believe that government must ensure that proper standards are maintained, of decency and law. I believe it needs to make prostitution and pornography illegal (or as difficult as possible to get), as well as taking a tough line on crime, with the death penalty being used for murder and rape.

If murder is indecent, why should the state response to the taking of a life be to take that of another? Particularly if the justice system rests on human judgement which can be erroneous. Why impose a penalty (death) that can never be appealed if it is determined in a court of law that there has been a miscarriage of justice?

As I said, I only support aspects of the ideology. I don't think anyone has ever fully supported every aspect of an ideology.
calling yourself libertarian is like calling yourself communist, there's not really much room for leeway. actually even less.

You seem to be a economic libertarian and a social conservative. Or rather, a generic right wing American conservative. Of course, it isn't my place to say what your ideology should be called or what-not.

The term for paternalistic libertarianism is 'conservatism'.

History says there's rather a lot of room for leeway in both ideologies.

Yeah. Anyone seriously comparing Maoism or whatever Pol Pot advocated to original Marxism or even Marxism-Leninism is in for a surprise.

Well I have a theory on that. The vast majority of those falsely convicted were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Most crime tends to happen in unpleasant, seedy places, or at times when law-abiding people are less likely to be out. Therefore I have a theory that most of these people in these areas are probably criminals, or of a criminal bent, so in reality its just saving the trouble of arresting them for an offence they might commit in the future.

...

What. Is. This.

Pro-life libertarian is as near a description as I could muster.

Classical liberal is apt as well.

Pragmatist Third Way Democrat. A little left of center. More progressive than Mark Warner but more moderate than Barack Obama.
I'm a Reagan-Clinton Democrat.

A culturally "traditionalist", technocratic communitarian with market liberal tendencies. In general, my personal orientation trends toward collectivism and group action and my general outlook is bureaucratic. At the same time, I accept basic economic truth. There's no difference between denying free trade, denying evolution, and denying gravity.

I generally align with the Republican Party because I view the GOP as the "natural party of government" and the only legitimate major party in American politics. In that the Democratic Party can only gain serious power through collaboration with groups I view as rent-seeking non-state actors (see: union thugs, the higher education cartel, and other rapacious organizations) or through politically motivated central planning that is bad for me (Obama's "we'll reward our friends and punish our enemies").

That and the Democrats seem very culturally hostile to me. I find the social policy of the ascendent single-urban-secular-white-liberal cohort of the Democrats culturally incompatible. I find the very outspoken Judeo-Christian-Western stance of the GOP quite strange and somewhat disagree with it, but it seems like something I can at the very least co-exist with.
