Nationwide, including county and municipal positions.  Including stuff like resort improvement districts and other such things.

Over 500,000. I don't know if there is an exact answer.

That sounds correct.

I don't suppose anybody knows the exact answer, but I would assume one exists.

Although I suppose there might be some definitional issues - what with the "including stuff like" part.

Heck, I've got too many to vote for just on my own ballots, twelve for this November alone, plus another seven I'll get a chance to vote on in other times.  Plus I'll have a state Representative, state Senator, and a US representative to vote on.

(Seven countywide offices, four school board members, one district solicitor.  [Solicitors are elected from multi-county districts.])

That doesn't even count the nine State constitutional offices up in non-Presidential years nor the two US Senators.

That's a grand total of 33 offices I get to vote on, tho fortunately they never are all on the same ballot.  (Possibly more if I've forgotten some.)

An absurd amount, many of which should be unelected positions, others should have their local governments consolidated into larger regional based systems.

IL has the most units of local government in the US: 6994. PA is second with 4871. According to the Census the US total is 89,476 in 2007. Add state and federal to get 89,527. In 1992 there were 85,006 units of government with 513,200 elected officials. So I would guess there are slightly more officials today to match the increase in governmental units since '92.
