I've been to a Quaker service myself once, and may go again someday on a fourth Sunday.  (My UU church skips the fourth Sunday.)  I was told is was fairly eventful service as four of the people were inspired to say something which was more than usual.  Following the period of quiet reflection, they did some more traditional hymn singing and then they had their equivalent of Sunday school, tho it was more involved in social activism than anything strictly spiritual.  Not that that is bad, but not what I consider for church.

of course I am aware of that.  the point being that when the war machine is in full gear, nearly anything can happen, and there's no reason to believe it won't happen again.

There's every reason to believe it won't.  The modern US military does not need or make use of masses of lightly equipped, poorly trained troops.  Maybe if we were at risk of being actually invaded, the draft would come back, but that's not the case, nor do I expect there is even the slightest chance of that happening while you are of draftable age.
