My pal's grandson has been asking me for months now to have drinks with him and his buds at the college bars... I don't usually patronize those establishments since drinks at the post are far cheaper- but to be a sport I've agreed. What do college age folks usually drink now- beer only or a more expansive palette?

It depends heavily on the college guys.

It'll probably be a lot of beer, though.

(Watch Clarence's pal's grandson and his friends turn out to be hipsters and keep the PBR flowing all night, loudly protesting that they only drink it ironically)

Beer mostly. I would drink exclusively PBR but others drank whatever was cheapest. Girls like vodka but I can't stand it most of the time.

I haven't been in a while, but I'm somewhat familiar with the nightlife around UF. If you know which bar(s) you'll be going to, just let me know and I'll probably be able to tell you what to expect Smiley

Bacon King- we went to the Salty Dog (which was around when I attended the university), the Swamp, the Cantina, and the Bank- which was downtown not across from the school...
It sure was interesting- I am not feeling too well today. These frat boys sure can drink! They mostly had whiskey and ginger ale- a tasty libation. At one point this- as they refered to her "sorostitute" came up and had some sort of dare chart for her 21st birthday...one of the dares was to kiss some one older then 50 so I got myself a peck on the cheek

According to the frat boys- I am now an "honorary brother"....I guess picking up the tab the whole evening helps with that! Wendy wasn't too pleased when she picked me up past 2....

Sounds like a grand time, even if not so good for your wallet. One feels much better having drunk vodka the night before rather than whiskey however. Just ask any alcoholic! Tongue  Even better is pot. One wakes up the next morning feeling very rested and ready to take on the world for one more day. Smiley

My drinks of choice were whiskey & diet or long island iced tea.

Since I've given up pop, I've been drinking whiskey sours occassionally but more beer.

When we do trivia on Monday nights, it's always a bucket of Molson Canadian Light.

Whiskey sours are terrific, good choice Inks.

Never had ginger ale with whiskey but that sounds pretty tasty.

Obviously a specific type of whiskey, but over here, scotch and dry (as in, dry ginger ale) isn't all that uncommon, although I prefer scotch and soda (since I think in some parts of the US, soda is interchangeable with pop or other softdrinks, when I say soda, I mean soda water - similar to tonic). I also like the lime and soda combinations, too - (obviously straight lime and soda is a soft option if you're not drinking, but it's also a good mixer) - brandy, lime & soda; chambord, lime & soda (don't knock that until you've tried it), I think some people order vodka, lime & soda, but yeah, the chambord option is my preferred pick.

As a fan of Scotch, I'm saddened that you mix it with something - there's nothing better than some nice single malt Scotch (room temperature - I don't like it over ice).

Oh, believe me, this is only in nightclubs and only with Johnny Red, which I haven't done in a while - like I said, I've been more chambord, lime & soda in recent years, or a plain and simple G&T. Normally I drink better scotch, and like you, I normally don't even add ice - although I had a bartender once say that the barest dash of water enhances the flavour. I don't go out much now, however our favourite place when we have gone out for the past couple of years has been a cocktail bar, which has an exceptional scotch list - certainly no need for mixers with Lagavulin or Ardbeg Uigeadail.

Alright - one of these days I'm going to make it to Australia and we'll split a bottle of Scotch.  It may be a ways away, but one day, I do want to make it to Australia.

Whiskey on the rocks is the correct way to drink, but I can tolerate whiskey sours.

Jagerbombs are popular right now among college age students.  Alternatively, straight shots chased down with a bud is always great.

I guess picking up the tab the whole evening helps with that!

Good god, we need to meet halfway and go bar hopping.  Say, NC?  Smiley
