I guess that's nice and all, but I look forward to the day when this sort of thing doesn't make the headlines. I don't really give the proverbial rat's a$$ what somebody's orientation is. This is especially true when discussing celebrities.

The only thing to not like about it is the possible reinforcing of stereotypes concerning women who want to make a career in the military and other male dominated professions.  For that reason alone, it would have been preferable for the first gay general to be male.

Cool, but until then, there are some gay youth, and even adults, who need positive role models like this.

Honestly I didn't imagine there was a female general.

There was a female four-star general a while back.

Ah, was that because of Clinton as well?

Bill.  He's the one that started the ball rolling with this toleration of gays and women.

The two I had any dealings with were both married to fellow officers.  The only one I ever actually met was a hard ass (most generals are super nice..unless they are a Marine)...and it certainly wouldn't have surprised me if she was in the closet.

I'm more impressed with her Bronze Star and Combat Action Badge than I am with her sexual preference.

As it should be. Promotions should be based on job performance, not on identity.

We celebrate that we've reached a point in history where she can be celebrated for her job performance instead of seeing her accomplishments negated because of her identity. She could have been discharged two years ago for having a woman pin a medal on her in a ceremony recognizing her achievements.

As it is, I think she deserves respect for having to accomplish everything she did while also having to live under constraints of speech and identity not experienced by her straight counterparts.

She's also got a senior parachutist badge and a parachute rigger badge, which is cool...but she's got no Valor devices and no Purple Heart...so she's probably never seen real action.  Some of those (Legion of Merit, Bronze Star) they just give you for not being a douche and being a high rank.

You do for the CAB, and only recently (2003?).

The Bronze Star can be for meritorious service, but still in a combat zone.  Much of the time, the the Legion of Merit is a "retirement" medal.  I know about 4-5 people who have them, and only one was not presented on retirement (another brigadier).
