Senator Sawx (D-NH)/Former Senator Oakvale (D-AZ) - 53.8%, 375 EV's
Governor Maxwell (R-OK)/Senator TJ in Cleve (R-WI) - 44.9%, 163 EV's

Senator Sawx from New Hampshire turned out to be the next big thing, defeating such prominent opponents as Former Senator Oakvale, Former Vice President Bacon King, and liberal Georgia Governor Adam Griffin. He was a dark horse in the race, but proved to be a very strong general election candidate, and with Oakvale's interesting and appealing views to some small government friends, he moved the voters.

Republicans had less luck. Their original frontrunner, maverick Senator Clarence had a heart attack and dropped out of the race. This left a contentious battle between Kentucky Governor ZuWo, Governor and Former Senator Maxwell, Senator Hagrid, and Governor Cathcon. Maxwell ended up the winner, but even with a uniting pick of prominent social conservative TJ in Cleve, he could not make up the gap between him and Senator Sawx.

Social conservatives were highly disenchanted by the choice between an openly gay social democrat and a socially liberal libertarian in the mold of Gary Johnson.  Naturally they decided that a straight social liberal was better than an open homosexual, and that a diehard supporter of the free market was far preferable to a man more left-wing than any American President in history.  Yet liberals were energized by Peter the Lefty's candidacy, and many pundits viewed his decision to campaign on pocketbook issues as a wise choice.  Moderate voters found both of their economic views uncomfortable to contemplate.

Maxwell was able to sway affluent and educated voters, helping him to win New Hampshire and Virginia.  Ohio and Florida swung simply because of the closeness of the race.  Yet this combination was enough to win Maxwell 270 electoral college votes compared to Peter's 268.  Some say that Pennsylvania itself could have swung had it not been Peter's home state.  Socially conservative, Republican-leaning voters ultimately decided it to be necessary to vote for a straight social liberal to prevent the election of an openly gay social liberal, and social democrat.  This factor combined with Maxwell's appeal to educated, affluent suburbanites outside of Philly and Pittsburgh would probably have been enough to deliver him a winning coalition had the home-state effect not energized Pennsylvania Democrats to elect Peter.  Colorado also came extremely close, but its youthful population voted for Peter due to his promise to abolish public university tuition fees.  Yet it wasn't enough.

By one electoral vote, Maxwell defeated Peter to become President of the United States for reasons which he himself would never have wanted.

Senator Peter (D-PA) - 48.1%, 265EV's
Governor Supersonic (R-TN) - 49.7%, 273EV's

I wasn't sure if the preceding poster still had to win. Apologies if so.

President Supersonic is fairly popular, he has a 51% approval rating going into the election. Senator Miles (LA) is the Democrat's nominee. Miles runs to the right of Supersonic on several social issues; this helps him stay competitive in the south, but backfires with voters in swingier states, especially out west.

On election day, Supersonic wins reelection 51-48 and winning 284-254 in the electoral college. Compared to the last election, Miles is able to flip his home state of LA and wins MS, mostly because of his popularity along the Gulf Coast. NC and VA, both razor-close last time, trade columns.

Although failing to win his home state, Utahn SLValleyMan manages to pull off a narrow win against Marylander Anton Kreitzer, thanks to his western strength:

Secretary of Treasury ElectionsGuy defeats Oklahoma Senator Maxwell

Secretary of Treasury ElectionsGuy (R-WI)/Former Governor ZuWo (R-KY)
Senator Maxwell (D-OK)/Former Senator Sbane (D-TN)

President Harry Truman leaves office unpopular, doing damage to any Democrat who would run, especially with popular former Treasury Secretary ElectionsGuy, who protested the administration while leaving, winning the Republican nomination. Democrats said if you can't beat em, join em, and nominated fiscally conservative Oklahoma Senator Maxwell. However, his fiscal conservatism hurt him at first: trailing massively in most states. However, Electionsguy did damage to himself by running hard against the new deal, while Maxwell, seeing an oppurtunity to gain leverage, ran on fixing the New Deal, not destroying it. Electionsguy still won, but by a closer margin than most expected.

Governor Oldiesfreak1854 (R-MI)/Senator Dean Heller (R-NV) - 285 EVs
Governor Adam C. FitzGerald (D-OH)/Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) - 253 EVs

The election dramatically isolated parts of the nation for one candidate or the other. The Northeast and Pacific stuck with the Democrats while the South and West went for the Republicans. While the Ohio Governor did not fear he would lose his own state, Wisconsin's tossup nature and it's proximity to Michigan resulted in him picking Senator Baldwin in order to better their chances there while also balancing the male/female ticket that were both LGBT.

Oldiesfreak, feeling confident that he could carry Michigan, decides to pick a popular Republican Senator from Nevada after Governor Adam FitzGerald's botched comment early on that he would promise that he would never overturn the ban on prostitution.

In the end, Governor ACF narrowly holds on in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, and Oregon while Oldiesfreak sweeps a number of tossup states down south and out west giving him the victory.

1876

The contest that would define a century. Matt Rose, a Union Army General and reform Governor of New Jersey, would win the Presidency by the barest of margins against former House Speaker TNF of Kentucky, a radical Republican insistent on "completing the Second American Revolution" by campaigning to establish a ten hour day. Rose promises to "accept Reconstruction" and "defend the voting rights of freedman," a major departure from established Democratic policy up to that point. In the end, party coalitions shift a bit; immigrants supportive of the ten hour day crossover for the Republican ticket, while traditionally Republican industrialists crossover for the classically liberal Rose.

Rose will take the Oath of Office as the Republicans clinch control of the House and TNF is once again returned as Speaker. Ironically the greatest reform to come out of the Rose administration will be the Ten Hour Bill, officially mandating a ten hour workday and shepherded through the House by the Speaker from Kentucky.
