Neutral. His politics aren't as bad as they used to be, and his TV programmes are often pretty good.

Portillo after and before the 1997 defeat are really like two different people. The post-defeat one I like quite a lot actually.

Would have really liked him at a time. From what I've read about/seen on his show after he left government, he is very irritating. As a former British member once said, Portillo before the '97 defeat was Blue opebo and after is Red opebo (but at least Red opebo is hilarious!).

The one episode of his program was (supposed) to be about Thatcher and the Tories. It seemed like half of his questions and comments to his guests were about him.

Ah, but opebo has always been socially liberal.

Yeah, I knew I should have mentioned that. It makes Portillo worse.

It's like he noticed that everyone was delighted that he lost and that instead of mentally responding with 'the bastards!' wondered why that was.

Just for curiosity I clicked on the link of his grandfather, an exiled Spanish republican. I found these verses by Luis Gabriel Portillo:

Cuando en su propia sangre redimida
España otra vez libre resucite
No encontrará a su alcance otro desquite
que ahogar odio en piedad, y muerte en vida.

They talk about Peace, Mercy and Forgiveness. Just like a famous Azaña speech in Barcelona, 1938, during the Spanish Civil War.

Speaking of the Spanish Civil war, one of very few Tories I'd have second thoughts about gunning down on a battlefield.

Really? You say this because you don't know the Spanish conservatives. Seriously, I prefer to avoid battlefields if I can.

Before he lost in 1997, he was an arrogant douche. Since then, he's mellowed out considerably.

If Portillo was elected Conservative leader in 2001, it would have done a world of good for them. Anyone was better than Iain Duncan, i'm turning up the volume, Smith.

Didn't realise IDS had that much support and opposition outside of UK borders, tbh.

Even the former radical Thatcherite Portillo seemed a more likeable person than Duncan-Smith.

The solution to global manipulation by Global corporations is so simple: Global Unions. Have the big boys WTO make it law … then these corporate loyalists have no advantage of moving off shore, because all wages are standardized … giving all workers a good chance at survival, and helping American jobs from our prodigious inventiveness stay in America. If Vietnam, India and Malaysia all had Union scale wages, then corporations FROM America would not have the option of destroying our economy by moving all our jobs offshore.

Unfortunately, the great man only has a few fans. Sad
