I would be independent throughout but I would align more closely with the DRs and then Democrats at first. Then after William Jennings Bryan I would move to the Republicans - the party which I still feel less uncomfortable with today

1788-1792: Federalist (who could NOT be for George Washington?)
1796-1824: Democratic-Republican
1828-1844: Democrat (at least of the populist Jacksonian variety)
1848-1852: Whig (Zachary Taylor and Winfield Scott, both war heroes from the Mexican War)
1856-1892: Republican (John C. Fremont and Abraham Lincoln stand out as key reasons why i would switch)
1896: Populist (William Jennings Bryan)
1900-1932: Socialist (from Eugene Debs to Robert LaFollete and Norman Thomas)
1936-present: Democrat (mainly because of the New Deal and the Great Society, as well as the embrace of the Counter-Culture of the Sixties and Seventies)

Proud liberal,

If you would have been a Socialist from 1920-1928, why be a Democrat now now?  Why not remain a Socialist?  Just curious.

Robert LaFollette was a Republican who ran under the banner of the Progressive Party.

because the Socialists effectively imploded by the beginning of the Cold War with the return of the Red Scare, and besides Democrats were still Democrats back then and not just wannabe Republicans.  if they spoke for the common man, they spoke for me.
