All right, I've had this idea for a while for a "How would you have voted" thread where instead of in national or state/provincial election, we could have a thread where in a given country and you were a member of the party with which you most sympathized, how would you have voted in its leadership and deputy leadership elections?  Here's a UK edition.  And yes, you can change your hypothetical party affiliation at a given date (ex. voting in all Labour leadership elections up to and including 1994, leaving the Labour Party and switching to the Lib Dems around 2003, and voting in all Lib Dem leadership elections after that.  Just be sure to say why).  As is to be expected of me, I'd be Labour.
How I would have voted in leadership elections if I were a Labour member:
1922: Ramsay MacDonald
1935: Clement Atlee
1955: Arthur Bevan
1960: Hugh Gaitskill
1961: Hugh Gaitskill
1963: Harold Wilson
1976: Tony Benn first ballot (he was much more moderate as a cabinet minister than he later was)/James Callaghan on the other ballots
1980: Dennis Healey
1983: Neil Kinnock
1988: Neil Kinnock
1992: John Smith
1994: Tony Blair
2007: Gordon Brown
2010: Diane Abbot as a display of rage against New Labour in the first round, though I wouldn't have voted for her if she seemed to have a chance of winning/Ed Miliband in the other rounds.

Deputy leadership elections:
1981: Dennis Healey
1988: Roy Hattersley
1992: Margaret Beckett
1994: John Prescott
2007: Jon Cruddas/Harriet Harman in final round.

So pick a party (which you can change) and state your hypothetical votes.  If this is a success, I just might do a Canadian edition.

Labour:

1922: In hindsight, Clynes. At the time, probably MacDonald
1935: Attlee
1955: Bevan
1960: Wilson
1961: Greenwood
1963: Wilson, Wilson
1976: Benn, Foot, Foot
1980: Foot, Foot
1983: Hmmm....probably Kinnock at the time, but Heffer in hindsight.
1988: Benn
1992: Smith
1994: Could have voted for Blair without hindsight....the Tories had been in power for fifteen years and (like most Labourites) I would have been pretty desperate to get them out. Beckett with hindsight though.
2007: Brown - but McDonnell if he had got onto the ballot
2010: Ed Miliband, Abbott, Burnham, David Miliband, Balls would have been my preference list.

Deputy leadership elections:

1981: Benn, Benn
1988: Heffer
1992: Gould
1994: Beckett
2007: Pretty difficult this one, but my preference would have probably been: Cruddas, Benn, Johnson, Harman, Hain, Blears

Conservative:

Imagining myself as a Tory for this....

1965: Maudling
1975: Heath, Prior
1989: Meyer

Liberal/SDP/Alliance/Liberal Democrats etc:

1967: Lubbock
1976: Steel
1982: Jenkins
1988: Ashdown
1999: Preference list: Ballard, Kennedy, Hughes, Rendel, Bruce
2006: Another preference list: Hughes, Campbell, Huhne
2007: Huhne

Remember that ordinary Labour members could not vote in leadership elections until the leadership election of 1983, that ordinary Tory members could not until the leadership election of 2001 and that ordinary Liberal members couldn't until the leadership election of 1976 (I think. I'm not entirely familiar with how the electoral college they used then actually worked). So your hypothetical as to be as a hypothetical Member of Parliament which makes things different.

After a recent (very slight) ideological transformation, let me redo my Labour list:
1922: MacDonald, probably Clynes with hindsight
1935: Attlee
1955: Gaitskell
1960: Gaitskell
1961: Gaitskell
1963: Callaghan first ballot, Wilson second
1976: Callaghan.

1988: Kinnock.
1992: Smith.
1994: Blair, Beckett with hindsight.
2007: Brown, reluctantly.
2010: Abbot as my display of rage first round, Ed Miliband in the others.

My votes in Tory leadership elections based on who I think would have made the least electorally successful leader:

1965: Powell at the time, probably. No idea how a post-ROB speech Powell leadership would have turned out....don't particularly like to think about it.
1975: Well, certainly Thatcher without hindsight. With....hmmmm....probably one of the minor candidates on the second ballot. Peyton, I suppose.
1989: Thatcher had become rather toxic by this point, so her.
1990: Major lacks charisma, but managed to run a pretty effective campaign in 1992. So probably Hurd on the second ballot. Thatcher on the first.
1995: John Redwood
1997: Peter Lilley
2001: IDS, quite obviously. Sorry Phil.
2003: No real contest
2005: Liam Fox

It's a surprising fact given what happened nine years later, but J.R. Clynes was actually the candidate of the Right, and MacDonald the de facto candidate of the Left.

Only gonna do it for the past 3 labour elections, since despite being a shameless hack my party knowledge is awful beyond the basics.

1994- Tony Blair, not much explanation needed. A charismatic modernizer who had the ability to beat the Tories after 18 years.

2007- Would have reluctantly voted for Brown, after he did his best to damage Blair I didn't have high regards for him.

2010-Now this is the difficult one, if I voted with my current views, knowledge etc I would of voted for Ed, without a doubt. He's the most powerful, passion and intelligence leader of the opposition since Atlee. However if I voted with my 2010 views in mind I would have rather shamelessly voted for David, the robotic brother

I know - but it's for future reference more than anything. I would've voted Sturgeon regardless of who she was up against though.

Conservative Party

1965:  Enoch Powell

Then I would have later joined Powell in leaving the Conservatives, albeit as an independent.
