Remember that ordinary Labour members could not vote in leadership elections until the leadership election of 1983, that ordinary Tory members could not until the leadership election of 2001 and that ordinary Liberal members couldn't until the leadership election of 1976 (I think. I'm not entirely familiar with how the electoral college they used then actually worked). So your hypothetical as to be as a hypothetical Member of Parliament which makes things different.

It's a surprising fact given what happened nine years later, but J.R. Clynes was actually the candidate of the Right, and MacDonald the de facto candidate of the Left.
