A man of few words-but when he spoke, people listened.
That is how John Rendell was described to posterity. From his humble origins in rural Missouri, to the halls of power in Washington, D.C., Rendell was known for his quiet confidence and his unshakable character. The experiences that he had had early in life-many of them challenging tests of internal strength-made a profound impact on his life, both helping and hurting him when it came to politics.
Ironically, if you had asked him a mere decade before he entered politics that he would someday be a statesman, Rendell would have laughed in your face, and maybe wondered if you hadn't gone a bit mad. For this was a man who kept his hands clean, who welcomed debate but hated to argue over petty matters, and who came from a place where political figures were looked at with suspicion in the best of times. This was a man whose Lutheran spiritual roots seemed to have ingrained within him a deep sense of right and wrong.
But all of Rendell's preconceptions proved to be mistaken, when, in contrary to much of what he thought he knew about himself, he made the fateful decision to enter a state legislative race in Missouri....
