Lets say Obama doesn't want to run a 2nd term due to unpopularity. The Democrat party doesn't want a candidate to replace Obama for 2012, would rather wait for Hilary or Brian Schweitzer to run in 2016.

What would a Romney vs Gary Johnson map look like?

Mitt Romney would easily win every state, probably D.C. as well. Additionally, Republicans would do very well downballot, increasing their numbers in the House, easily taking the Senate, and getting several pickups in Gubernatorial races.

I'm sure Gary Johnson could win more states than that.

My map

R - 288
L - 250

Doubtful. Even though some Democrats may vote for him just because he's not a Republican, a lot of others won't vote for him because he's probably to the right of Romney on the economy, which is the most important issue in this election. Romney would also be seen, despite his flaws, as the more trusted and ready of the two candidates.

Additionally, the Democrats certainly wouldn't give much effort in helping Gary Johnson, and since the Libertarian Party has little organization, he wouldn't have the ground game or the finances to assist him like Romney would have. I'm not sure if he'd get over 35% on Election Day.

A breakdown like this would be likely, IMO.

Romney voters:
Romney 85%
Johnson 15%

Obama voters:
Not voting: 50%
Johnson: 30%
Romney: 20%

Resulting in a Romney 70%, Johnson 30% election.

I split up my map based on 'traditional' family values and the whole drug war thing, which Romney is against legalization if anybody is curious.  The 20-30% split from Obama voters are on the social issues.

My problem with the Libertarian party is the lack of organization, recognition and awareness for it to become a game changer in the electorate.
