As many of the above replies have insinuated, I suspect this forum would actually have been a hotbed of John Anderson support.

I actually voted for John Anderson (in my high school's mock election).

1980 was seen as a contest between a flawed challenger and a failed President (with a 3rd choice thrown in). During the last debate I think Reagan raised enough doubt about Carter, and in the final days reassured his own softer or on the fence supporters, to change a close election into a landslide (the fact that the election was held on the 1st anniversary of the hostage takeover in Iran was the coup de grace, though Carter's electoral luck in the South was singularly bad).
