Some attribute to west Virginia's vicious swing away from the Democrats a result of the collapse of the coal industry.  This was largely caused by the advent of fracking- a cheaper way to obtain natural gas.

So if fracking was developed earlier, say 2005... would Republicans faced the backlash for the downturn in West Virginia?  How would West Virginia vote in later elections?
