Not sure if I agree with this argument. The film was a trigger for the protests, and an event around which protests could be coordinated, but I suspect the protests are motivated more by domestic political considerations. The protestors' map of America lies in the Middle East.

More of a dark demonstration of the fact that when your house is completely filled with gas you don't want to flip the light switch.

....but if I live a couple of blocks away I can.  Sure, it might piss off the people in the gas filled house so much they start burning matches out of anger, but I can't be blamed for that.
