http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2012/09/kansas_birther_kris_kobach.php

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, an informal advisor to Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, said on Thursday he and his fellow members of a state board were considering removing President Barack Obama from the Kansas ballot this November.

Kobach is part of the State Objections Board along with Attorney General Derek Schmidt and Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer, all Republicans. The Topeka Capital-Journal reported that on Thursday the board agreed to consider whether to take Obama off the ballot because they said they lacked sufficient evidence about his birth certificate.

“I don’t think it’s a frivolous objection,” Kobach said, according to the Capital-Journal. “I do think the factual record could be supplemented.”

The board is looking at a complaint filed by Joe Montgomery, of Manhattan, Kan., who claimed the Obama is not a natural born U.S. citizen and so is ineligible to be president. The man appears to be part of a group of conspiracy theorists known as “birthers,” who deny Obama’s birth certificate is real.

As unlikely as Washington taking Romney off the ballot.

As unlikely as Washington taking Romney off the ballot.

The inane thing is that they are even giving this a hearing rather than just rejecting it outright like all courts have done with all idiotic birther lawsuits.

Imagine the backlash if they actually do this. I'm sure the Romney campaign does not want this to happen. It could turn into another weekly news cycle dominated by Donald Trump, Sherrif Joe and other ROmney supporters who are also birthers

Kris Kobach is not only a birther, but the guy behind Arizona's xenophobic immigration law, and may have ties to white nationalists/supremacists. So it's not surprising that he's doing this, even if it is really stupid.

Yeah, considering KS is a no win for Obama, he and his team are probably hoping fo this as it'll help in NC and FL, not to mention fundraising and great media coverage.

Getting to the actual substance of the claim the birthers seem to have moved the goalposts now. Apparently they are saying that Obama isn't a "natural born citizen" because both of his parents weren't US-born citizens...which is a whole new thing they apparently made up. The fact that anyone is listening to it and not laughing is troubling.

So is Kobach indeed an "informal advisor to Mitt Romney", or is that part smear?

Maybe Gary Johnson will break 20% in a state (Although I seriously doubt Obama will actually got removed from the ballot.)

This sort of thing could easily backfire on Romney, especially considering that Kansas is a safe R state.

I hope they do. This would certainly kill Romney slim chances in November.

Wouldn't meaningfully change anything if it somehow were to happen.

This is a win-win for Obama. He loses nothing as he wasn't going to win, and Romney takes a big hit. I'm sure Obama agents are trying to encourage his removal from the ballot right now- I certainly would in his position.
