Democrats should have easily picked up that seat when Bill Cohen retired.  Not only was Clinton carrying the state 53%-35%, but Democrats had a good candidate in former Governor and US Representitive Joe Brennan.

Susan Collins wasnt even well known.  She was basically nobody who a finished a poor third in the 1994 governor's race.  Her winning is like Scott Kleeb running for Ben Nelson's old seat and somehow winning this year.

Can somebody figure this out?  Because I sure cant.

From what I've read, Snowe's popularity helped her.

In 2006, Scott Kleeb lost in a R+24 CD by 10 points only. Considering that Maine is not D+24 (more like D+4, I think), it's not that unlikely.

BTW, Kleeb would have been a better candidate than Kerrey. But his 2008 senate campaign wasn't that inspiring.
