This is the perfect example of a really bad poll:

President Barack Obama has a nine-point lead over Republican presidential rival Mitt Romney in Mr. Romney’s native Michigan, according to a poll released Friday by Michigan State University.

The MSU State of the State Survey found that 39% of the likely voters among 1,015 Michigan residents surveyed between June 12 and Aug. 13 – before the conventions — favored Mr. Obama, while 30% said they supported Mr. Romney. The poll has a margin of error of 3.08 percentage points.
