This was recently discovered at a Billa supermarket here:

I usually really like to shop at Billa, they have very good snacks etc., but this is the most ridiculous and environmentally dangerous sales strategy I've ever seen.

Besides, peeled bananas in plastic looks absolutely horrible.

Billa is now facing quite a storm on the Internet (Facebook and Twitter etc.) and the marketing has already said they will review it ... Tongue

Why would anybody feel it's too much hassle to peel a banana, and thus be more inclined to buy a peeled one? I know people do feel that way about oranges, but...

That depends on the type of oranges....

But yeah... this is a sign of the end times.

Ah yes, I was using the German definition of "orange" here. Which happens to be biologically correct (An orange is a crossbreed between a wild mandarine and a pomelo. Tangerines and clementines and, well, all the mandarines you can actually buy are breeders' variants of wild mandarines but are not crossbred), but that doesn't change the fact it was just a case of sloppy translation from German.

I took a quick glance at those pictures and thought we had another BIG BLACK COCK incident on our hands.

May I ask to what you are referring?

Obviously stupid.....one question though, are they "organic"ly grown?  'cause that would make the funny even funnier.

Obviously they are.  If they'd been grown properly they would have lasted long enough to sell the right way, peel and all.  They wouldn't have had the early-onset black spots and rotten parts that made the store want to remove the peel and parts of the fruit in order to try to sell them.

This store is just being cheap.  Normally, you'd expect to throw out a few bad bananas, but they probably thought, well, why not take the really ugly ones and pull off the peels and cut off the rotten parts and try to sell them that way.

Never would have happened if they'd avoided all that "organically grown" stuff and gone with fruit that had been properly pesticized and herbicized and fungicized.

Considering the banana peel is possible nature's best packaging, this is ridiculous.

I disagree, it shows the natural survival adaptations that let the bananas be carried since  rotten bananas aren't eaten by   anything that would move it around.

natural adaptations?!  But no banana in any store shows any natural survival adaptations!!  They used to, about a hundred years ago, but banana growers long ago found out what people wanted in a banana and have taken steps to ensure that they get it.  This is a subject that is written about extensively.  Bananas commonly available are homogenized frankenfruits carefully cultivated for over a century.  In fact, there's a great deal of concern that one serious outbreak of a fungus or bacteria could extinguish the banana forever precisely because of the lack of genetic diversity among bananas.

Yeah, I don't know why you would replace a quick decomposing natural peel with plastic.
