I love it here, though obviously it's not perfect. The 'scene' in Amherst is eminently avoidable. The bros in Southwest are the bigger concern.

Actually South Africa, or at least the major cities, has a pretty good scene, bands from there go on country-wide tours all the time, I also found this rather good webzine: http://rise.hxc.co.za. I've seen some videos on YouTube of shows in South Africa and they look like lots of fun. So I'd much rather live in Cape Town or Durban with their song scenes than Orania.

Discounting for the moment that I don't care about the "scene", I'd rather not live in a city where one has to avoid stopping at red lights to prevent carjacking and where armed guards and chain link fences are almost obligatory for most homeowners.

Orania sounds like a nice place to live in than the rest of the country. Not having a scene is a bonus, but as long as I can stay away from it, than it isn't important.
