The fact that Bush's favorables are now that high disgusts me.

Yes, that.

But maybe the fact that the media doesn't cover Bush that much now helps him.

If I go to Google News right now, I can only find 60.000 articles about Bush, but 155 million for Romney and 190 million right now for Obama.

^Yeah. Plus, I suppose Bush was at least nice to his dog.

Perhaps considering what the GOP has turned into in the last four years... I suppose a few go "yeah, but compared to that lot..."

former presidents see a gigantic jump in their approvals, so that makes sense. I mean, Carter is at 53% right now. Prolly nostalgia.

Exactly.  Everyone looks back at the 'good old days' and remembers them fondly.

And I think, with the aloof Romney running, Dubya's good ol' boy persona is wanted.

Off the top of my head, I'd expect "socially conservative Hispanics" to be the demographic most likely to have a favorable impression of Bush but not of Romney.

People forget that W, to his credit, was actually to the left of his party on immigration.

I love Bush. He was 4 times the candidate Romney is, although I think Romney would be a better president.

White Southerners also. They loved Dubya, even towards the end of his presidency. Romney just doesn't do it for them.

Yep, I have always loved Dubya. At least you could count on him to do the right thing.

Bush as a human being is worth 46% favorables.  As Presidents, he's a 30% guy at best.

Romney is only that high because of hackery.  He'll slip back to 20% once Republicans stop pretending to like him after he loses.

Maybe Romney should campaign with Bush so his image will improve?

Keep in mind the question asks if you have a favorable opinion of Bush as a person, not if you approve of the actions of his presidency.

As a near-recluse he can do little damage to his reputation.

It's amazing what not holding or running for political office can do for your approvals. When there aren't a barrage of criticisms of you flying around everywhere and are a generally likeable guy, as George Bush is, a lot of people are going to approve. You may forget here on this forum, but many of the criticisms of Romney, such as that he's a robot or he doesn't care about people or can't connect with people, etc are the very things George Bush was good at.

Favorability, not approval.
