http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/259741-biden-middle-class-has-been-buried

“This is deadly earnest, man. This is deadly earnest,” the vice president said. “How they can justify, how they can justify raising taxes on the middle class that has been buried the last four years?

Lol.

The gaffe is that he should have said forty years.

It's okay though.  He's assuming his Onion persona and will be unstoppable by 2016.

Joe Biden said the wrong thing? I find that hard to believe. Had Mitt been president the last four years, however, this would have been a completely true (and smugly proud) statement from Ryan.

Anytime there is a misstep by the Romney campaign, you see folks on here jumping all over it.
Anytime there is a misstep by the Obama Campaign, the same folks dismiss it as irrelevant and desperation by the Republicans.

I expect the responses to this throughout the next few days to reflect my above statement.

In general I'd say you're right, but surely you see the difference between a gaffe and something else?

Biden saying this is a gaffe. Romney babbling off the cuff about why airplane windows can't open is a gaffe. They don't seriously imply anything other than that the person speaking either was caught at a bad time or has a tendency to say not so smart things (which in itself is worth consideration).

What isn't a gaffe is purposely and directly telling a small group of donors that you couldn't give less of a sh**t about 47% of the American population whom most already believe that you look down on, or signing NDAA rather than going through with the veto. These are things that these candidates have done that aren't gaffes, but are awful things that are truths.

There is a difference. This is clearly a misspeaking, and means little more than Ryan's "It's too complicated to explain."

I'm sure this will sink Obama, just like Biden's "chains" remark did.

Well, yeah, they were hired to privatize Social Security.  Only Nixon can go to China.  Mittens was hired to play the all-to-obvious bad cop.

This is what I hate about October. I worry about every little thing destroying my candidates chances of victory. This thing included.

Oh yeah, that happens to me too.

The worst thing is that I'm experiencing this feeling again, just six months after experiencing it full-scale in the French race. Imagine how I felt when Hollande's lead suddenly shrunk from 10 to 4 points in every single poll in the last 2-3 days of campaign.

A nice little gaffe...

One excerpt from his speech in Charlotte, NC today said "the middle class has been buried the past 4 years, how dare they (Romney/Ryan) raise taxes."

This is not much, but its a headache Team Obama does not need...

Got beat by a good 7 hours on this one, I'm afraid:

Still, it's as little news in this thread as it is in the other one. Move along.

no headache. It's gotten  to the point where Biden says so much sh**t that none of it resonates and none of his gaffes stick to Obama. If he was a realtively quiet VP, the media would seize on this.

With the possible exception of Romney's 47% comment, I doubt that any single gaffe made by either candidate (or their surrogates, including VP nominees) will have any real electoral effect.

That said, will Republicans really want to publicize a statement, however ill-conceived, that includes the claim that they will raise taxes if they're elected?

This won't hurt at all, and I'll tell you why:

1) People like Joe Biden but don't take him seriously
2) 'buried for the last four years' means by the Bush/Replublican economic debacle, and real people understand that, and
3) they understand that Obama's been laboring manfully to dig them out, and finally and most importantly -
4) they understand that bringing back the party which caused them to be buried - the GOP - is not a solution.

In all seriousness, Romney needs to run on racism, not on the economy: any attempt to appeal to economic insecurity actually damages him with swing voters (who are mostly in the white working class) and favors Obama.

Yeah this is how people view Biden: http://www.theonion.com/articles/biden-says-life-better-than-it-was-4-years-ago-but,29477

It's obvious whoever wrote that article likes him, but doesn't take him very seriously.
