Prostitute patrons can't hide their faces anymore

By LARRY NEUMEISTER
Associated Press

Gone are the days of the nameless, faceless "john." Men who buy sex are now likely to end up with their faces splashed across the Internet or the morning newspaper.

A Maine tourist town shaken up by authorities' promises to reveal the identities of dozens of clients of a fitness instructor accused of prostitution is just the latest place to enlist public shaming as a preventive measure.

Fresno, Calif., sponsors a website called "Operation Reveal" that features mug shots of suspected johns, while Oklahoma City has the vigilante-style "JohnTV." In Arlington, Texas, a highway billboard declares "This could be you" under the picture of four suspects.

In Maine, the small-town scandal has literally put Kennebunk on the map - it's now part of a database tracking more than 870 municipalities that have launched initiatives targeting men who hire prostitutes.

Well, this is stupid, naive, and won't be effective.

This is disgusting and I'm pretty sure it's illegal.

I doubt the courts will touch it when they let the underlying illegality of paying for consensual sex and the ridiculous sex offender registry laws (consensual sex with your bf/gf who is 1-yr under the age of consent? pissing in public? on the list!) stand.

You'd think the prudes were into BDSM, what with their fixation on enforced chastity.

A considerably better idea, actually, than targeting the prostitutes themselves. Let's hope we can move to a pimp-and-john-centric legal attitude towards prostitution in general soon.

Or just start worrying about more important things? (Not talking about non-consenual prostitution, of course.)

Getting your face plastered on a billboard or a special website because you've been accused of something? Having your identity revealed and published as a "john" just because your fitness instructor's been accused of prostituting herself out to some of her clients?

Yeah, I'm with Lief- no way this is legal. It's quite obviously an attempt to punish people without any judicial determination of guilt.

In the case of the dance instructor she's also being charged so not quite. In addition to the issues BK brought up the law is absurd to begin with.

the people who eat up the surplus-value should always be targeted first.
