Ruth Davidson MSP (Con, Glasgow) is currently giving a speech to the Conservative conference in Birmingham about how the Conservatives are at the forefront of the campaign to keep Scotland inside the United Kingdom, and in doing so has made an allusion to the Quebec referendum in 1995:

I would like to know if this statement is correct, ideally by someone digging around the polling archives and finding a poll about the referendum conducted across the whole of Canada asking the question "Do you believe that Quebec should become independent?". If not, then at least a poll asking people's feelings about Canada's future direction if Quebec had voted for independence.

I couldn't find any polls asking the specific questions you asked. However, polls show that about half of Canadians are apathetic to the whole question

Most Canadians would accept an independent Quebec provided there was a super-majority voting for independence and Quebec didn't maintain any "ties" with the rest of Canada.

Ms. Davidson is referring to the Unity Rally when she refers to Canadians saying "we want you to stay" which was a massive federalist rally held in Quebec three days before the last referendum with about 100 000 people from the rest of Canada attending. So yes, I think it would be a terrific blow to national pride if  Quebec left, but a certain amount of apathy has set in after 30+ years of threatened seperation.

For full disclosure, they were bussed in there and that wasn't reported in the electoral expenses, which made than it was an illegal electoral expense.
