Actually, stupid people generally know they are stupid by the time they reach adulthood, so they tend not to overestimate themselves.
Obama's not stupid, he just had a bad debate. Since a lot of it was just due to his facial expressions, stance, uneven speaking, and letting Romney get the last word on everything, it's not a surprise that he didn't notice it. I didn't notice it when reading the transcript, either.
Obama did well in the debate on logic. Where he lost was on style. Debate is an art, not a science. If it was a verbal variant of doing proofs, with and's and or's and Q.E.D.s, then Obama's perception would have been accurate. Where Obama went wrong is that he needs to realize it's a performance. It's not about memorizing the policy reasoning, it's more like talking to someone around your kitchen table. You've got to appeal to people's gut.
