That's more or less what happened in 2000 as Gore trailed late but pretty much evened the score the final week (and nearly won Florida).

There was an extremely late-breaking Bush scandal (he claimed he had never been arrested, but it turned out he had had a DUI in '77); this broke 3 days before the election, and was responsible for a small last-minute Gore surge. However, you can't really count on that sort of thing happening.
