From the debate, paraphrasing:

Ryan: My dad died. It was sad.

Biden: My family died. It was sad.

I'm calling it a draw.

Ironically, more people can relate to Ryan than Biden.

In keeping with your bad Ruth dugout analogy, J.J., that's strike two.

No, I would argue that Biden's tragedy was more severe, however, more people have lost a parent than a wife and child.

Ok. Why is that ironic, J.J.?

Because, arguably, more people has experienced the loss of a parent (or caring for an ill parent), than had their spouse and child killed in accident.  Even though I would argue Biden's tragedy was worse, Ryan is more likely to connect with more people on an emotional level.

Ironically, none of that is all that ironic. Is what I just said ironic? Argh!

Ugh.  The premise of this thread is why I came to hate US politics.  That's why I'm glad the thread took the direction it did, re. J. J.

Actually I think it is ironic that Paul Ryan paid for college using the survivor Social Security benefits from his father and yet he wants to take away that opportunity for others.

Where has he suggested doing this?

2005 address to the Atlas Society.  He described Social Security and Medicare as “collectivist” and “socialist” systems that must end.

First, do you have a link?

Second, is so, was he talking restructuring or abolishing?

He would like to see individual retirement accounts for Social Security.  That is not abolishing Social Security.  Good Lord, he's even talking about FICA withholding for it!  Roll Eyes

He has talked about people "demagogueing" the subject, and this thread is perfect example.

Really?  I'm demagogueing?  There is nothing that prevents people today from setting up individual retirement accounts.  The whole point of Social Security is that it sets up a floor to protect people.

I just gave you facts and links.  Which is far better than most people on here will do.  It is more than the Romney/Ryan camp will provide regarding their economic plan.

Let me ask one important question.  If what Ryan proposes existed when Paul Ryan was collecting death benefits from his father’s death his college fund most likely would have been wiped out on Oct 19, 1987 (~3 months before he would no longer be eligible for them).  I wonder who would be Romney’s running mate then.

You made a accusation, that was false.  Ryan talked about restructuring the program, not doing away with it.  He even mentioned a madatory tax for it.

Let me ask you one; what do people getting Social security now do when the money runs out?
