Is Mitt Romney's policy to give states the right to ban abortion? Seeking clarification and in what time frame will states be giving that access.

So in 2020 if a 15yr old girl gets pregnant in Alabama she could potentially be screwed and forced to have the baby?

At this point he went from wanting to do what he could to discourage abortion while waiting for Roe to be disregarded and then would ban abrotion federally and now he says that he won't do anything about abortion except hope that the the guy he replaces Ginsburg will join Roberts, Alito, Scalia and Thomas and not follow Roe....so yeah. That's pretty standard Republican polcy since Roe.

Sure, he will - just like Baby Shrub, Daddy Shrub, Ronnie Ray-gun, Nixon...

He'll also repeal Romneycare ... lulz.

Ginsburg is not going to last four more years. So a Romney victory would mean the end of Roe v. Wade and a number of states quickly moving to completely ban abortion.

Queue the quadrennial SCOTUS scare!
They really shouldn't pull this trick out until the last week, b/c people might just think long enough to figure out:

Nevermind 7 of the 9 justices appointed by Repub presidents didn't.  The trajectory of the last 40 years is undeniable:  "Cultural" hedonism (vs. a doomed backlash from rent-seeking "family" "values" Repub veal pins) and economic darwinism (vs. a doomed/corrupted backlash from rent-seeking labor union Dembot veal pins).  Pwogwess!

Scalia, Thomas, Alito and Roberts would all vote to overturn Roe v. Wade. Romney would surely find a nominee to replace Ginsburg that had a history of opposing it as well.

Nah, she could just cross the border to the nearest civilized state that allows abortion

It's very doubtful.  A number of justices have expressed opposition to overturning precedent.

Because the emperor's party is predictive of justices decisions...  Souter, Roberts ...

They won't pull the trigger.

Of course, if i we're still a Dem, I'd need to create some sort of distinction b/w my "opponents" on "peace" drones, bank bailouts, health insurance company bailouts, etc.  The "cultural" cues provide a decent stand-in, i suppose...

Hopefully. It would be about the only good policy position he has. However, I doubt he actually would do a single thing about abortion.

And asbestos and lead-based paint for all!

Though, seriously, it is a great risk to pull the trigger on Roe.  Probably even bigger than the risks that Obama took of Healthcare.

Roll Eyes

They crossed that bridge years ago.  This is the John Roberts' court now -new precedent is now being set.  I don't see any reason why Roe vs. Wade is somehow sacrosanct when a century of decisions establishing limits on campaign spending was overturned in a single year.

It's not just Alabama. Conservative Republicans control or usually control the trifecta (Governorship & both houses of the state legislature) in big purple, blue or otherwise socially moderate states such as Virginia, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Florida, North Carolina, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Missouri and so on. Given the current makeup of the GOP I have no doubt that these states all would have passed draconian bans on abortion without Roe vs Wade. You could see this actually happening and going into effect within the next three or four years.

The overturning of Roe v Wade would be the best thing that happened to the Democratic party in decades.

Nah, she could just cross the border to the nearest civilized state that allows abortion
Which would mean, Alaska, Hawaii, New York, and Washington. None of them is exactly close to Mobile, Alabama.

That's not Mitt Romney's policy.  Mitt Romney's policy is to appoint Supreme Court Justices that favor said approach.  There's a subtle but important distinction there.
