The only way that this scandal would be significant would be if it were Brown.

As long as it isn't Sherrod Brown, I don't really care...

That's who first crossed my mind.

By the way, this scandal could mean Senator Booker. If Menendez resigns, you know Christie will do that.
Burnish his nonpartisan credentials, get rid of formidable rival? I hope he wouldn't if actual control of the Senate weren't at stake, I suppose otherwise it's harmless.

It would be to get rid of a potential rival. Plain and simple.
It would also give Booker a launching pad for 2016. I pray to god he gets no where near the WH or to winning the primaries. I hope Cuomo buries him.

Yes, New Jersey's never had an incumbent Democratic Senator run for governor.

He would be Senator for like a month or two and then decide to run against the guy that appointed him? I don't think so. Wink

Still waiting for Daily Caller to actually post the story. Knowing their track record, there's a good chance it's garbage.

Why would Drudge report a Romney scandal?
There has to be a democrat version of Drudge Report out there.

That'd be Larry Flynt.

Anyway, the Senator in question is clearly Bernie Sanders, duh.

Not if he wants to win a Republican presidential primary.

Political self-preservation comes first.  He's up next fall.  If he appointed a Republican to flip the senate only months after the state voted in a Democrat, he might as well not run for re-election in blue NJ.  Particularly if his appointee is the deciding vote on the Ryan Budget, he would be setting himself up for inverse 2010.

I was hoping it would be Sherrod Brown, but I guess Menendez will have to do. But either way I am still skeptical that this could be true. No real source has been posted in this thread yet.

Before I saw Drudge was "reporting" this I thought maybe it was a certain Louisiana Senator who likes diapers.

Taxpayer funded trip? Possibly underage hookers? Oh, Bob. This seriously couldn't happen to a better asshole!

Yeah, you can't comeback if this is true.

More recent rumor is that the hookers aren't underage.   The rumor mill also claims the Daily Caller is close to publishing.  Their story is supposedly being vetted by their lawyers or something like that.

My first claim to fame this election cycle was Mitt Romney winning the nomination, as I was one of the few who didn't jump from ship to ship, but stuck with him throughout the roller-coaster ride.

My second claim to fame was predicting that the Pennsylvania Senate race would be a sleeper, and while Casey will more than likely win, it's still much closer than anyone (Except me Wink) anticipated.

I suppose this can be my fourth, as I said Menendez before anyone else on here. Tongue That being said, this isn't as good as I thought it would be - unless it really breaks out and more details emerge, this'll have a moderate effect on Menendez (Put him around 55% instead of 60%), but shouldn't swing the race away from him.

No idea how much impact it can have. Hopefully Menendez still pulls this off. I'm glad it affects a candidate who might be solid enough not be sunk by that (of course, had it been Gilibrand or Carper... Tongue).

Why do sex scandals only affect men? That's awfully sexist.

As Becca said about corruption, depravity should also be equally spread among politicians. Tongue

Truth is an absolute defense to slander. Menendez is a public figure. Good luck proving actual knowledge that these hookers were lying.

Plus, no politician wants to go down that route for the nasty PR blow back alone.

Apparently Menendez didn't learn from those Secret Service agents that he said should be fired. Pay your hookers in full, buddy.

How does that old adage go again? Those who live in glass houses, shouldn't throw stones?

In any event, he'll escape this one. Prostitution is legal in the Dominican (as long as there's no pimp involved) and New Jersey is too worried about life or death right now to care about another politician that can't keep it in his pants.

Yeah, if this is even true his main crime (as opposed to his main sin, which would be...hard to pin down) is just being a cheapskate.

Basically the evidence is:

-He visits the Dominican Republic a lot
-The two prostitutes were solicited by a man named "Bob"
-They thought they recognized him in a picture

He should obviously resign immediately. This story is air tight and very convincing. Roll Eyes
