Dark red = at least one per every 800k people.
Medium red = one per everyone 800k-a million people
Light red = one per every million to 1.25 million people.
Light blue = one per every 1.25 million to 1.75 million people.
Medium blue = one per every 1.75 million to 2.5 million people
Dark blue = one per over 2.5 million people
Gray = No Apple Stores

Hawaii has the best ratio, one Apple Store per every 458,270 people. Indiana meanwhile has one for every 3,258,461 people, the worst amongst states that have them.

Very interesting, I'd like to do this with other stores, restaurants and such. Any suggestions?

For starters, here's one I figured would be interesting (if not mostly predictable).

Waffle House restaurants per capita!

90% shade: Less than 50,000 people per Waffle House
60% shade: 50,001 to 100,000 people per Waffle House
40% shade: 100,000 to 300,000 people per Waffle House
30% shade: 300,001 to 550,000 people per Waffle House

Gray states: No Waffle Houses, obviously.

Green states: More than 1,000,000 people per Waffle House. These three aren't fully covered by Waffle Houses, and the restaurant is only present in a small portion of the state. New Mexico has two WaHo's in Albuquerque; Illinois has two in the St. Louis suburbs; and Pennsylvania has 11 dotting the middle of the state, as well as a couple in the Scranton area.

Georgia has one Waffle House for every 25,427 people. Illinois has one for every 6.4 million.

My state of Salzburg has 530.000 people and 1 official Apple store.

So, we would qualify for Dark Red ... Wink

What you mean to say is,

"Huh, I thought Melbourne was hipster-land".

Which is, unfortunately, true, but real hipsters hate Apple because it's an American monolithic corporation that makes inferior products that are all about the label, which is the kind of thing that only North American, some Scandinavian, and Sydneysider hipsters like.

http://articles.businessinsider.com/2012-01-28/strategy/30669674_1_fast-food-food-chains-food-restaurants

Looking at that map, as the article says, Vermont, Washington, D.C., Maine, Montana, and Rhode Island have the most fast food restaurants per capita.

is there supposed to be a political correlation here?

Just an economic one. Apple Stores are generally only found in high-rent areas and in "nicer" malls. As I've told a friend, if you're walking past an iPad billboard in Los Angeles, you're in a real upscale neighborhood.

Doing this at the county level would likely be more relevant. I'd say counties that have multiple Apple stores have more in common with one another than they do with non-Apple Store counties in the same state.

Texas is light blue on the map, but really most of the state is "gray" while the areas where people actually live are various shades of red.

COUNTY (# STORES-LOCATION) - PEOPLE PER STORE
Collin County (1-Frisco, 1-Plano) - 0.39M
Montgomery County (1-The Woodlands) - 0.46M
Travis County (2-Austin) - 0.53M
Fort Bend County (1-Sugar Land) - 0.59M
El Paso County (1-El Paso) - 0.80M
Harris County (4-Houston, 1-Friendswood) - 0.84M
Bexar County (2-San Antonio) - 0.86M
Tarrant County (1-Fort Worth, 1-Southlake) - 0.95M
Dallas County (2-Dallas) - 1.19M

Ha, it was more down to that I thought that Apple Stores were more prevalent then they actually are, but that works too Tongue

Interesting.  Here in Thailand everybody's got a Smart phone (I don't know if they're apples or some kind of initiative brand.. like what, Samsung?) - the great majority of my students have smartphones, and play with them continuously.  It doesn't seem that up-market as I think most of them have allowances of just $150-300/month.

That's not an official Apple store (as similar looking as it is), it's an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Still third party owned and operated. The fact that these exist though may be why Apple hasn't been very eager to get one open in Austria.

I bet most of those are counterfeit. Thailand is a massive hub of counterfeit phones.

There is also a correlation with how much of the population lives in a big city. In a lot of the middle of the country there are a lot of people living in small to medium size towns which cannot support an Apple store. Whereas in the west, a lot of the population is congregated in cities. Nevada is the best example of this. Even though it's a fairly downscale state, it is also a very urban state with almost everyone living in the two cities. Even in California, you have cities like Modesto, Fresno and Bakersfield which are big enough to support an Apple store even though they aren't that well off.

I'd been going to make a joke about Queensland being more technologically advanced than Victoria (to contrast with the more common jokes of visiting Queensland and having to wind back your watch 50 years) but this is the actual reason. Queensland is the most de-centralised state, and Victoria is small, compact, and with only a few large regional centres outside Melbourne.
