52-40 Love/Matheson

Matheson actually leads Indies by 59-26, so this has to be an absurdly GOP-leaning district or a loaded GOP sample.

Well, the actual polling was done by Mason-Dixon, so it seems legit.

The district is a GOP-leaning district, yes. All of the Utah districts are, because that's how they gerrymandered it to be. I don't know the exact percentage of Republicans, but 50% of people that have already voted are GOPers, and Matheson is only getting 9% of Republicans anyway, according to the Trib poll. And women aren't supporting him as much; Love is winning that group 54 to 38.

By the way, Matheson's own polling says he's leading by 2 points, but internals aren't that reliable.

Side note, there's also polling on the 2nd district, and the Republican Chris Stewart is leading Democrat Jay Seegmiller 55 to 28.

And two prominent Dems from the state legislature are retiring, with about half of the remaining ones vulnerable, so it's not looking good for liberalism (or even moderation) in Utah.

The Utah GOP has perhaps gotten rid of that rascal Matheson with vicious gerrymandering.

Matheson's only getting 9% of Republicans. Rough.

Gerrymandering yes, vicious gerrymandering no, actually. Not by the standards of what other state GOPs are up to.

Has more to do with Mittens being on the top of the ticket. Matheson would still win if Santorum or someone else (except Huntsman) was on the top of the ticket.

Good, Matheson is one of the worst Democrats in congress.

This is true, and it's why I'm not that upset by this, even though I voted for Matheson. He literally votes 50-50 with Democrats and Republicans (more with Republicans if you don't count party-line procedural votes), so he's useless, especially since he doesn't advocate for Utah in any way.

At least Mia Love will bring some diversity to the Utah delegation.

Perhaps, but not diversity in ideology. This is disappointing, despite Matheson's more conservative tendencies. I'd rather have a Democrat voting 50-50 than a Republican voting 0-100 as you will get out of Utah Republicans. Matheson never really bothered me because he wasn't one of the outspoken types like Ben Nelson. He voted the way he did, but I don't believe he ever went before the TV cameras to throw the party under the bus.

Matheson talks exactly like a Republican, and votes as if he were a moderate, sane Republican, so I say good riddance. Mia Love isn't really prepared for politics on a Congressional level (she's not that good a campaigner or at answering questions outside of talking points, and it shows), so I think she'll be booted out in 2014 or 2016 anyway. Again, at least if she only stays in office for 2 or 4 years, at least we'll have some diversity.

Matheson is so bulletproof it's incredible. This is the second gerrymander aimed only at removing him he's trounced.

Matheson won by a mere 2,600 votes!  I kind of expect Love to take another crack at it in 2014, which means I'll have about a year long break before nasty ads start flooding the Salt Lake City Television Market...

There's something almost epic about the figure that is Jim Matheson. I'm not hugely fond of him but it's hard to deny at least that much at this point.

I still hate him because he has no ideas of his own and just goes with whatever gets him re-elected (to keep doing nothing), but yeah, I have to agree, he's probably one of the most legendary politicians from Utah at this point. Dude is better at keeping his job than any other politician I've seen, and he's had to earn it each time.

Considering that she couldn't pull it off this year with Romney on top of the ticket, good luck with that...

As for Mason-Dixon, lol!

Now, republicans have managed to get Matherson representing another portion of the state. He'd be as popular with people in his new district as he was in the old one. And in 2016 he may run for Governor and maybe win Smiley
