August 31, 2060, RNC:
After a quick kiss from her husband, Haley Cavalier mounts the podium.  The convention hall is flooded with "Cavalier for President" and "Cavalier: Leadership for the '60s" banners, and delegates are screaming her name.  How did she get here?  20 years ago (though it feels like just yesterday), she was in the exact same place, campaigning for her husband.  But now she was delivering the acceptance speech, after a glowing keynote from the former President and current Chief Justice Ron Cavalier.  After serving as California's senator for 12 years, she coasted to an easy primary victory, and was now poised to take on the most vulnerable incumbent president in her lifetime.  After 12 years of Democratic rule, (all from three very narrow election victories, with the Republican candidate actually winning the popular vote in 2056), the nation was ready for a change.  President Cavalier's successor, President O'Reilly, was a Democrat in Name Only who continued all of Cavalier's policies, though his VP, now President Vercetti, is a self-proclaimed socialist.  O'Reilly appointed President Cavalier Chief Justice as a show of bipartisanship (though many point to the fact that O'Reilly's hand was forced by the Senate GOP, who had a near-supermajority in that chamber), and Cavalier did not criticize the president openly from the Court.  He only now stepped out of political retirement to campaign for his wife of 44 years, and hopes to return to a quiet life after swearing her in on January 20.

But now as Senator Cavalier mounts the podium, no one is thinking of her immensely-popular husband; all the cheers are for her.

"Thank you!  Madame Chairwoman, distinguished delegates, Mr. Chief Justice, thank you!  I am running for President not to promote my agenda, but to promote the agenda of the American People!  In the last 4 years, we have had chronic unemployment, and today the unemployment rate stands at 11%!  Is that the America we want to hand down to our children, to our grandchildren?"  ["NO!"]
"Well then I'll make you a deal.  If you vote against four more years of President Vercetti, I will ensure America's brightest days are ahead of us!...  A recession is when your neighbor loses his job, a depression is when you lose yours.  But recovery is when President Vercetti loses his!"

As the former First Lady concludes her speech, the delegates give her a 15-minute standing ovation, which the Chairwoman repeatedly tried to bring to order; the chaos was only ended when Senator Cavalier retook the podium to say "Thanks, but quiet down now; I want to hear Governor Hannity speak!"

Post convention:
"If the election were held today, for whom would you vote?"
Senator Cavalier: 57%
President Vercetti: 39%

Do you believe America is headed in the wrong or right direction?
Right direction: 29%
Wrong direction: 65%

Do you approve or disapprove of President Vercetti?
Approve: 35%
Disapprove: 61%

September 2, 2060, DNC:
"We strived to do what is right for America; we attempted to establish a single-payer healthcare system with a public option, but the Congressional Republicans turned us down.  We tried to appoint non-activist, progressive Supreme Court justices, but the Republicans in Congress refused to cooperate.  They have no ideas of their own; they are just the party of no!  If you want America to return to the 1920s, by all means, vote for my opponent in November.  But if you want to continue the fight for the middle class, the working people of this nation, I will fight for you!  It would be my honor to continue this fight for another four years!"

"President Vercetti, as always, was an eloquent speaker.  But on style, and especially on substance, Americans agreed with Senator Cavalier.  They were given an ineffective president who refused to cooperate with Congress, and who didn't even win the support of the people the first time.  The only reason why anyone voted for him last time was because our nominee last time around was a weak candidate, an ineffective campaigner, and, in my opinion, didn't even want to be president.  The president may get a small bump out of this convention speech, but after his handling of the aerospace bubble, the American people are ready to return to the 2040s."
"I disagree; I think people are agitated with the Congressional Republicans-"
"Then why did Republicans get larger supermajorities in Congress than 1920 after the midterms?"
"Because Senator Cavalier is a very effective crusader."
"Because the people are ready to return to the policies her husband enacted in the 40s to help this country prosper-"
"Alright you two, we really have to move on-"

It's going to be coming back but it's on short hiatus.  I'm studying up on Napoleon because he's going to have a very prominent role in my TL, and I can't really move forward with it until I know how to get the results I want by tweaking the right things.  Any assistance here would be much appreciated Wink
