I'm not sure if this still holds up, but c. 2011 I recall reading Hillary Clinton wouldn't accept another term as Secretary of State.  And because he was on the list in 2008, what if Obama appoints Kerry as SecState?  Who would fill his seat in the senate?  And would Patrick run for it himself come 2014?  What if Romney jumped in?  I would love to see a Romney vs. Patrick senate race, and under the right circumstances Romney could win.  Perhaps Mitt finally improves his batting average when it comes to winning elections (he's won 1, MA 2002, in his career vs. 3(?) losses).

Just spitballing.  It could make a really cool TL too Wink

Kerry would be about the best choice for SOS on the Democratic side.

As for a replacement for Senate, perhaps the Kennedy clan would want their Senate seat back.

There are no circumstances anymore in which Willard Mitt Romney could win any election, much less for the senate seat in a state that he barely improved on McCain in even though and possibly because he governed there.

If Romney moved to Utah he could be elected to the U.S. Senate if he ran for it.

In UTAH, possibly yes, though he might have a couple of issues in a primary.

I know it's not a realistic scenario at all, but even so, what would happen if Jon Huntsman and Mitt Romney fought each other in a primary?

In THAT situation, probably Romney. But Romney's real competition would probably a conservative in the vein of Mike Lee.

Luckily for Romney he could use his old trick and outspend the other candidate in the primary, an advantage that I suppose would help him fending off a conservative challenger by a decent margin.
