Also, if it's not too much trouble, could you download a set of municipality/CDP labels (like from the Census or whatever) and add it to the map?  I'm not sure if that will make things too crowded, but it's fun for cross-referencing purposes on statewide maps.

Who exactly are the voters who support marijuana legalization but oppose gay marriage to the point of voting to make it illegal?

There are just more people who are inflexibly opposed to gay marriage (almost exclusively for religious reasons) than marijuana legalization.  As Sbane says, a lot more crossover votes (from both parties) on pot.

Also, RI, how are you doing the map overlay?  It looks amazing.  Nice, nice work!

Adjust the transparency of your precincts layer to 40-60%, and add a reference layer behind it (Bing roads or combined roads/imagery would probably work best).

I saw that, and I know how to do transparency, but I'm not sure how the overlay with Bing (I think that's what he's using) is done.

*drools*

Thank you.

Also, were there any precincts that voted 100% for/against R-74? Any of them have more than a handful of voters?

Benton County had a 20-0 Rejected precinct (it was 20-1-1 Romney) and a 47-0 Rejected precinct that appears to be a random Mormon enclave.

The biggest 100% Approved precinct had only 8 votes.  The lowest performance for R-74 in a populous precinct was 1.72% (628-11).

I'm not sure why there's "literally no reason to trust" the results unless they report by precinct.  It's an arbitrary consolidation of ballot types for fairly technical purposes.

I don't believe Oregon reports result by precinct. Last I checked Oregon votes by mail in presidential elections.

By mail? In 2012? That's surprising.

Voting by mail is increasingly common nationwide, and is done by the majority of voters in the West.  Oregon and Washington operate entirely by mail.

That Ada County 2012 President map is like one precinct flip away from being aesthetically perfect

Those are huge precincts. How far does one have to drive to get to a polling location in places like that? Do they have multiple locations for the same precinct?

In a lot of cases, only a small portion of the precinct is actually populated.  Idaho has a lot of forest land.  There are some cases where precincts are so remote and low-population it isn't practicable to give them a polling station, and those precincts generally vote by mail.
