He has been preparing for that event for the past 60 years.

By the time he becomes King, if he does, he would just be beginning his job, at an age when most people are retired.

How does he convince his mother, 86 year old Queen Elizabeth II, to step down and turn the monarchy over to him?

Please discuss.

He can't. The last time a monarch abdicated was in 1937.

Charlie will have to wait.

Personally I'd prefer to skip Charles and go for William. Charles has the charisma of a brown lunch bag.

Elizabeth II is not the sort of person who abdicates something she was taught to understand as a duty. The last monarch to abdicate did so for venal and selfish reasons.

What's he hoping to accomplish by complaining about it?

Besides, why does he want the crown?  It is not as if the monarchy in England has any real meaningful power to speak of anymore.  He can't rule, and cannot lead armies into battle like the kings of old.

Or, to put it otherwise, he understood it was a useless office which wasn't worth it. Tongue

It's safe to say that his reign will be a lot shorter than his mother's.

Considering how long Queen Mom lived, his mother may very well outlife him.

I'd like to see the quote if there is one...

Even Diana in that bloody stupid interview in 1995 said that she believed he'd find being King incredibly restrictive. Now, he's got a lot of freedom to pursue his interests and do what he wants, he won't be able to as King, I don't see him hungry for the throne.

Plus the Queen believes that the abdication in 1936, which forced her father onto the throne, led to his death. She takes her duty seriously and she will NEVER voluntarily abdicate.

Also for people who want to skip Charles altogether... why dump William with that responsibility when he doesn't need to?

Its a general problem in modern monarchies. The inheritance customs where developed in a totally different age where Kings died much earllier, often in battle. They should implement a retirement age at 70 or make it mandatory to skip a generation, so the middle generation could have a civilian carreer. But both things are extremely difficult to implement.

It's a good argument for male inheritance, as they can get their kids later, and have less chance of surviving them. (just kidding)

But there are a benefit in royals getting their kids relative late.

Since the previous Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mother) outlived one of her children (Princess Margaret) it's not impossible, especially given Elizabeth II's continued good health.

It may be quite possible, but I hope for no parent to outlive their children. As for Charles as king, I personal think, when he become king, he will be so in name only, leaving most of his duties to his son, seeing as he already now could retire, while William will have the perfect age and is much more popular than his father.

The reign of George VII will last 10 years tops. William the IV (assuming he keeps the name) will be on the throne for 30-40 years starting in the late 2020's. So it won't be all that bad for the British people Wink.

Well... let's say the Queen has another 10 years... that would make her 96 and Charles 74... Philip is already past 90... if Charles lives that long, that would mean another 26 years before William gets the throne and he'll be in his mid-50s

Are you sure about George VII. Why not Charles III? Too Stuart?
