Some of the stories that were published in Unfinished Tales may have been contemporaneous with The Hobbit, but they were so different tonally that reconciling them would be an impossible feat.

Technically, the movie can't draw upon Unfinished Tales.  Jackson only has rights to The Hobbit and LOTR, not the whole Tolkien corpus.  However, the details that are being added are found in the LOTR Appendices.

I doubt it, but like the Star Wars Prequels, it will never match the Original Trilogy.

I don't think this will suffer from the same problems those did.

And THAT is exactly why it won't be like the Star Wars prequels!

Probably not. My guess is that it'll hover around 75%.

The project has been rotten from the start and has only become more so. The first rule of a good adaptation is to show respect for the spirit of the source material. It might actually be the only rule. This project, however...

Meh. It still looks like the Hobbit.
That would be a LOT more than could ever be said about The Two Towers.

What I would like to see is a film of The Children of Húrin.
...but not from Jackson or anyone else involved with this thing.

No actually, the whole costume etc stuff could have been so much worse as far as the (non Dunlending) Humanoids are concerned. Guess we can keep that company on board, then.

I maintain that Faramir should consider consulting his lawyers with the aim of suing Jackson for libel. The case is overwhelming.

I'm representing the Ents in a similar case, actually. However, the case moves very slowly, since it's in an Entish court. I presumably won't live to see its resolution, but it should result in the violent dismemberment of all the earthly remains of Jackson's oeuvre.

This, as well as a few grouchy fans here who seem to want the film to be absolutely faithful to the book in every respect.    Roll Eyes

Unlike some here, I will wait until I see the movie before casting judgment on it.

You know, I bet Nathan associates that reference with its origin, not with Donnie Darko.

To know that we'd need to know what films Ben does like.

I liked Donnie Darko okay, but I wouldn't describe myself as at all attached to it.

He gave a somewhat positive review to Meet the Spartans.

I'm surprised that they put up a consensus with only 55 reviews in. They may end up having to change it a bit.

Currently at 73% (although it's only at 30% with the so called "Top Critics").

I think (and BRTD can refresh my memory) that it had a couple of funny moments.  My favorite movies are the LOTR trilogy, Harry Potter, Muppet Treasure Island, Aladdin, the Lion King, and The Dark Knight.  Juvenile, but all good movies.

Tolkien was fond of quoting that and influential in popularizing it (certainly more so than Donnie Darko, since everybody old enough and not wholly clueless knew the line by then), but he didn't think it up himself.

I was planning to see it before this thread informed me that it is to be a trilogy. Nine hours is far too much to ask of me, especially for a book of its size. I could read the book faster than that. Is it too much to ask to get those of us who are vaguely interested but are not hardcore fantasy fans there and back again in two hours? I like 3D eye candy, but too much gives me a tummyache.

Just when you go trough the pains of looking up a wikipedia article to get at some people on an internet message board, some random german guy gets in before you without as much as providing a link. Typical.

Do you seriously think The Hobbit is going to be presented to the public like that?  Did you see the LOTR trilogy all in one setting?  Obviously not -it is going to be presented in three parts in three consecutive years like the last time.  At least that's my understanding.

I hadn't thought all that much about it, frankly. As I said I'm not at all a fantasy person. I read it in the 9th grade because it was assigned in class. And it was a pleasant enough read. Certainly not as "rotten" as some books assigned to us *cough...Sense and Sensibility* Now that I do think about it, it does make sense that the Lords of Hollywood would milk it for all its worth as they've done with Harry Potter 7 and whichever Twilight book it was that also got split. But it seems to me that creating a trilogy where there was not one to begin with is, by itsef, as big a heresy as any superfan is likely to find once the movie premiers. But that's ok me with me. Like I said, not a core fan. I'll save my 10 dollars. Between 9 hours or nothing, this consumer is choosing nothing. But I have no doubts that Hollywood has that already figured too. It's just business.
