I admit I always respected Goldwater for sticking to his principles. While there are a lot of issues I disagree with him (though there are issues I agree, as opposed to a modern GOP crowd), his genuity is admirable. Plus he was a very colorful character.

His attitudes to civil rights, wanting to use nukes in the Vietnam war and his lack of emphathy for poor people makes him an HP in my book.
But some kudos for sticking to his principles, I guess...

FF. He's a man of principle and was willing to be consistent in his views, even when it alienated his party. Wouldn't have been my first choice in 1964, but I still would respect him.

A perfectly fine person, even if I don't agree with many of his policy positions.

I disagree with him on foreign policy and on the Civil Rights act, but otherwise Barry Goldwater is one of the greatest Senators we've ever had.

Generally speaking, a huge FF socially and fiscally. However, his foreign policy was crap.

Agreed, but to play Devil's advocate, it was only a few years after the missile crisis...

It must be noted that foreign policy in the context of the Cold War is far different from foreign policy 1990's-present.

Which is all the more reason his position on nuclear weapons was absolutely frightening.

I say FF for his spirited defense of liberty and limited government, but it's probably a good thing he didn't become president even as horrible as LBJ was.

HP, principles don't matter if the "principles" you stand for cause massive amounts of human pain and suffering. Goldwater's ideology is precisely why the United States is in such bad shape today.

No, in Carter's case I'd say FF with mixed results. He wasn't exactly fighting against equal rights for blacks and itching to use nuclear weapons.

I can't forgive Goldwater for voting against the Civil Rights Act, and beyond the moral imperatives of that Act passing, the long term damage that it did to the GOP. HP.

Well it did give them substantial control of america from the seventies till Obama (or rather, fortunate demographics) broke the racist's back.

Goldwater didn't want to ban pornography, wiretap people's homes or persecute atheists.
