This is ripping my heart out. These bastards decided to kill the people who had virtual NO CHANCE to defend themselves.

I hate this world.

Sad

The question needs to be asked though why this stuff happens so frequently in the US with so many victims all the time.

The gunman, who had some pre-existing connection to the school, apparently focused his attack on a particular classroom.

27 lives are gone, people. Most of them children. How about we respect that now and save the gun control debate and miscellaneous partisan vomit for a time when the bodies aren't still warm?

I believe the theory would be this could happen again tomorrow if we don't take action today.

Was the gunman a Chinese ?

Attacks on elementary schools often happen in China.

Really heinous. My first impulse when I heard about this was to blame gun availability, but honestly, this issue with shootings and people walking in and just spraying bullets - for whatever reason - is getting far beyond guns. Take away the guns and these people will make bombs. There's a broader, societal problem here.

And now there's a REAL sicko going around South Florida killing bottlenose dolphins, which frankly is beyond what I can even comprehend.

They said the shooter killed someone at his house, could be a family member.  Keeps getting worse and worse.

I don't think any gun control would stop these kind of things... they'll just find a different weapon.

My thoughts and prayers are with the victims.

Terrible, and yet it will happen again one day.  Prepare yourselves for that emotionally however you see fit.

Shooter was Ryan Lanza.  Close to 30.  This is insane.

Do you really think he could have knifed 27 people to death? I guess he could have used a crossbow, but that's about it...

This is the only reaction I could think of right now:

I hate to have to ask this, but don't American schools all have some kind of campus police / security people running around. Or does that not apply to primary schools?

With a sword and in a crowded area, maybe.

When I first saw the news, I thought Oh no, not another one, which I wouldn't think for any other country. An absolute tragedy, but, sadly, not surprising. RIP.

No. My HS had an unarmed security officer who probably would've had a heart attack if there was a shooting but was cut for budget reasons.

I don't think that's standard at any level. At least, I've never seen it.

what the ?

ethnicity is irrelevant here. the only connection might be that both countries are full of alienation, rage and despair.

Typically they're all locked like Ft. Knox....not all have police in the burbs.....in the city, yes, police.

Extraordinarily sad, but in no way shocking.. the routine nature of these atrocities makes it harder and harder to respond with anything but cynicism anymore.

How about we don't release the shooter's name and photo? Let's not give him the notoriety most of these monsters want.

Of course, this is impossible with the vultures that are the 24 hour news media.

There was a guy by the same name, Ryan Lanza, and age who lived in the same community.  I might have found his tweets.  Depressed, hoped the world would end in a fortnight.

Felt sick and remembered Dunblane. Just kids, babies looking forward to Christmas.
