So embarassing... why did he even schedule a vote, then? Epic failure

It's Obama's plan, or go over the cliff/curb/slope.

As much as I'm not a fan, I absolutely shudder in fear of a Speaker Cantor.

Haha, I was right about the projecting. It's boehner who can't keep his party in line, not Obama.

He makes Bachmann (thank God that thread was a prank) look pleasant as a potential Speaker.

Someone really shouldn't have yanked the people who wanted to balance the budget from the budget committee...

I don't understand.  Why would he make such a big deal about something neither Republicans nor Democrats want?  Don't they poll these things before announcing they are going to have a vote?  Please someone who knows more about these things explain to me what just happened.

Oompa, Loompa, doom-pa-dee-do
I have a perfect puzzle for you
Oompa, Loompa, doom-pa-dee-dee
If you are wise, you'll listen to me

What do you get when a Speaker can't count?
A huge train wreck and loss of clout
All your enemies chortle with glee
While down goes the economy

I don't like the sound of it

Oompa, Loompa, doom-pa-dee-da
If you were a leader, you could go far
You would live in happiness too
Like the Oompa Loompa doom-pa-dee-do

BTW--"Boehner yanks his 'plan B' " is one of the worst euphemisms of all time.

Wow, there's just so many different views in between the Republicans who rejected this bill and anything reasonable. Despite Obama's capitulations, there's a good chance we'll be going off the cliff.

Yeah, even more than for Boehner, this is a loss for the Republican brand. They can't agree to allow tax cuts to expire for marginal income over $1M, even after all deductions and such? With Grover Norquist's blessing. And they just voted to restore all sequestration cuts to the military. But they're oh so appalled by the deficit Roll Eyes

That smirk by Cantor after the meeting Boehner held actually got to me more than the failure of  the Plan B itself. I think we just witnessed Cantor stab Boehner in the back.

What's the procedure for electing a new speaker next month? Is it scorched earth time?

I hope the Democrats do absolutely nothing about this issue and let Republicans dig their own grave. They're such an effing mess at this point that there's not much Democrats could do to bolster their own point of view beyond the clearly advantageous position they've already put themselves in.

Normally if you don't know who the opposition leader is, that makes it harder to negotiate, but this is Obama we're talking about, so I'm sure he'll just negotiate with himself for a while.

The only way the Republicans dig their own grave here while the Democrats do nothing is by taking the rest of the country six feet under as well. You up for that?

To paraphrase the late Quebec politician Camil Samson, who died yesterday: "The other party brought us on the verge of the cliff, with us, you will make a step forward"

Having tax rates rise a few percent is "taking the country six feet under?" Melodrama much?
