Post about new shootings here. Considering their frequency, this will probably remain on the first page.

I think we should also set up one in the International board to keep it fair.

Haha, the foreign one won't have any events, but I fear there'll be plenty for this one.

Actually one of the firefighters who was shot was also a police officer.  It's also not uncommon for some jurisdictions to merge the two functions into one with public safety officers.

Body found in burned home of killer of 2 firemen

WEBSTER, N.Y. -- Investigators combing the scene Tuesday of a Christmas Eve ambush that killed two firefighters and injured two others made a grisly discovery: another victim.

The body is believed to be that of Cheryl Spengler, 67, of Webster. Police say her brother, William Spengler Jr., set a deadly trap for first responders -- a plan he detailed in a chilling note found at the scene.

The remains found the home were taken to the Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy. The cause of death was not immediately known, Pickering said.

Armed with a Bushmaster .223 semi-automatic rifle — the same weapon used in the Dec. 14 school massacre in Newtown, Conn. — a Mossberg 12 gauge shotgun and a .38 caliber Smith & Wesson revolver and a stockpile of ammunition, Spengler Jr. set a "clear ambush on first responders," Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering said at a news conference Tuesday.

For whatever reason these shootings happen not in isolated rural areas or in crime-ridden urban areas, but in where crime is usually fairly rare; affluent white suburbia. Newtown, Aurora, and Columbine are all wealthier than the national average, for starters.

somehow I doubt that.  If an area has a high rate of gun violence then it will have, by definition, a high rate of violent crime.  Admittedly, the data won't show up till the next year.

I think what you're trying to say is that the instances of gun killings that get national attention are the ones that happen to in upper-, upper-middle, and bourgeoisie WASP neighborhoods.  That I'd buy.

Not necessarilly.  Just because an area has a higher amount of violence than another doesn't mean that it has more of every different type of violence.  Sure urban areas have more violence in general, but it is not logically impossible for a relatively peacefull area to have a high rate of a very specific type of crime and still be, overall, less violent.

it's true that UCR stopped weighting the different crimes in their indices a number of years ago, so that each of the six types of "personal crime" are equal in weight.  It can be the case that gun shootings are high but an overall rate can be relatively low if there is a low incidence of rape, armed robbery, aggrivated assault, etc., occurs.  It would have been more correct for me to say that if an area has a high incidence of gun violence then it will have a high crime rate with respect to those indicators.  I still stand by my point.

You know: A small number of the polls you posted last year actually were right. Most weren't, and you refrained from posting anything that was unfavorable to your party.

Here, we have a case where gun ownership was a good thing. But it usually isn't, and you don't care to mention or even consider cases that don't support your position.

Hurting or killing somebody with an available weapon when one is threatened by that person really isn't unique or special or worthy of unique and special blessings, you know. Also, you use way too many empty lines.

I am very annoyed with how the large shootings get all the attention. They're a tiny, tiny fraction of the gun violence problem in America. And all the politicians just noticed that we have this problem? Have they been living in a cave? This is a much more common example.
