From today's Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

"In the still-unformed '08 presidential race, 24 percent of Georgia Republican voters said they favor Giuliani, the former New York mayor, with Sen. John McCain in second with 18 percent."

So Republicans in a state that is more conservative than average are supporting these two moderates?  I know name recognition alone is a huge factor at this point in time, but nonetheless I find this surprising.

how the poll is taken is usually at least as interesting as the answers it generates.

Right.  I don't have too many specifics on this poll, but I had similar doubts.  However, I do know that it was conducted by Strategic Vision, a very partisan Republican firm here in GA, and so therefore the results do have some value.  If such a conservative organization released a poll showing two moderates in the lead, there could be two possible explanations.  First, that even conservatives are willing to back Giuliani and McCain.  Second, that conservatives are trying to scare up some organization and support for a true conservative by showing how well the moderates are already doing.
