What state has gone GOP the least?

What state has gone Democrat the least?

In presidential elections.

actually Minnesota has voted GOP more than it has Democratic, since it voted GOP in every election since statehood in 1860 to 1932, except 1912 when it voted for Teddy Roosevelt. The correct answer if you count it as a state is DC, otherwise Hawaii, which only has twice. If you're only talking about states that have been states for quite awhile, I think the answer is Arkansas, only 1972, 1980, 1984, 1988, 2000 and 2004.

not even close. The answer is Alaska, only voting Democrat once in 1964. Among long term states the correct and rather suprising answer: Vermont. Only in 1964, 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004.

Years Arkansas went GOP:

1868, 1872, 1972, 1980,  1984, 1988, 2000, 2004

It didn't vote in 1864.
It went for Wallace in 1968.

That might be the least of any state that pre-dates the GOP.

Hawaii has gone Republican only in 1972 and 1984.

Vermont's over all record since they put in the popular vote:
Republiacn 33 times
Democrat 5 times
Parties that no longer exist 7 times

South Dakota has gone Democratic only four times: 1896(barely), 1932, 1936, and 1964. True, the GOP margins in 1916, 1948, 1976, 1992, and 1996 were fairly narrow... but it's still a staunchly Republican record.

Assuming you mean only 1960-2004, i'll give you the top of the barrel. No state has voted solid for one party in that period, only DC went solid Democrat. Between 1972 and 1984, all 50 states have voted Republican. And all the states that Goldwater won in 1964 either went for Carter in 76 or Clinton in 96.

Solid Democrat:
DC

Went Republican/other only once:
Minnesota (1972)

Went Republican/other only twice:
Massachusetts (1980, 1984)
Rhode Island (1972, 1984)
Hawaii (1972, 1984)

Went Democrat/other only once:

1964:
Alaska
Oklahoma
Kansas
Nebraska
South Dakota
North Dakota
Utah
Wyoming
Idaho
Virginia
Indiana

other:
Arizona (1996)

Went Democrat/other only twice:
Colorado (1964, 1992)
Montana (1964, 1992)
