The year is 1920...
...and America is recovering from a world war and an economic downturn. The legend of Teddy Roosevelt came crashing down with his death in 1919. Now, the nation, headed by the embattled President Norris faces the prospect of choosing a new leader. The Republicans, hoping to maintain a hold on their incredibly long time in power, have nominated war hero and Roosevelt friend Leonard Wood for President. The Democrats, hoping to appeal to progressives, urban voters, and the North, have nominated Senator Thomas R. Marshall of Indiana and Governor Alfred E. Smith of New York for President and Vice President respectively. The Democrats have chosen the line "Return to Normalcy" to describe their wish to return America to its pre-war state. Marhsall himself is touting his record as a pro-labor, pro-reform liberal in the state of Indiana. Meanwhile, the Socialists have nominated Eugene Debs--running from jail where President Roosevelt put him--once again for President.

The Republican platform includes the lowering of federal taxes from their wartime high, continued enforcement of progressive Republican trust laws, and a foreign policy including international disarmament. The Democrats as well are running on lowering wartime taxes including tariffs, a "Return to Normalcy" in American foreign policy, as well as limited American participation in the League of Nations. The Democrats also promise a revitalization of America and its economy in the post-war era and a new set of urban programs (largely the product of the Smith wing). Meanwhile Debs, running from jail, is nonetheless waging an aggressive campaign via surrogates and may pick up support from those tired of the talk of foreign policy.

No mention of Marshall's social liberalism or credentials as a progressive reformer Sad  Anyway, Marshall/Smith

I think I would have preferred Coolidge/Wood, but it's not a bad ticket anyway.

...Or of Debs' supporters hijacking the RNC?

These choices are wack. I cant believe Coolidge one of the best presidents ever lost the nomination to Wood. Voted for Wood but not happy about it.

I know, I wasn't crazy about any of them.  At least there's no La Follette in here. Smiley

At least we have an interesting election for once, instead of another 4-way battle between progressives.

I'm starting to doubt it.

Also if he loses it's pretty much all the fault you and your ilk.

Seatown, stop being so serious about things. This is just an exercise in what would happen if a bunch of nerds on the Internet controlled US history. It's not real. We have a 2/3 chance of getting a good President. It'll be OK.

Actually, it's probably more than 2/3 assuming Republicans flee from Wood.

Also, Thomas Marshall looks like a kid with a fake mustache and glasses that aren't his. Would you vote for a man that looked like that?

Guys, this is the last chance we have to vote for Debs! Don't waste it! If you don't want to do it for the sake of Socialism, at least do it for the sake of originality!
