Part of me feels sorry for Rick Santorum.

The reason he hates mainstream Republicans is that they more or less used him as a useful idiot during his time in the Senate (granted, he made a choice to play along). He was a good little footsoldier for GWB and naively believed that the GOP Establishment actually cares about overturning Roe v. Wade and "defending traditional values." Him and his supporters were all so sure that once they backed across the board deregulation and tax cuts, they would get something in return.

In 2006, Bush didn't lift a finger to help him win a third term. The only incumbent Senate Republican he made a considerable effort to help was Lincoln Chafee, a blue-blood moderate who voted with his party half the time on a good day. And what did Santorum get after his constituents threw him out? Any compensation for everything he'd done for the administration? An ambassadorship, perhaps? Deputy Assistant Secretary of something or other? No. And today, Lincoln Chafee is governor of his state and Santorum is in the political wilderness.

That's why Rick Santorum was so angry and full of seething resentment in his 2012 campaign. That's why he's still angry.

Unrelated question: Why are there so many gangs in the Senate?

Boredom, peer pressure, poor role models, etc.  Just the other day, Barbara Mikulski was caught carving her gang sign onto her desk.  It's just such a shame.

Senator Mikulski recently became the gang leader of the Appropriators, a gang that definitely keeps to themselves.  This once formidable group has seen their influence wane recently, but with the sawed off  shotgun from Baltimore taking control, perhaps they will rule the streets once again.

Uh...what? He's one of the few people that had Bush actually come in and campaign for him at one point and defended Bush until the very end. Hardly something someone does for someone they hate with a passion. And Bush went to help Burns and Talent, too, so enough with the trolling about how he only helped Chafee.

Bush didn't lift a finger to help Santorum after he lost election. When you're the president and someone you remotely give two sh*ts about loses reelection, you find something for them to do. You don't just leave them out in the wilderness.

To be fair, what role could Bush have given to Santorum? Ambassador to the Holy See?

Bush was probably miffed about how the Terri Schiavo imbroglio destroyed a lot of his political capital. Nobody wanted to make a big deal out of that nonsense other than Santorum, who got the ball rolling forcing everybody else to play along...

I always thought Santorum would be in th running to be Ambassador to The Vatican but short of pushing out the sitting Ambassador, what was Bush supposed to do? Whose to say Santorum even wanted something from Bush? He got some pretty good gigs after losing.

The thought of Rick Santorum representing anything other than the state of Pennsylvania is a truly horrifying image.

Santorum should only be allowed to have jobs that have no effect on social policy whatsoever.  Secretary of Transportation, for example.

Better yet, Santorum should just go become Pope instead.

Jesus Rick! It's one thing to oppose gay marriage but now you don't want gays to be able to do anything?!

I'm now starting to realized even more that Rick Santorum is definitely a "conscientious objector to the 21st century."
