With the abdication of Pope Benedict XVI

What papal name do you think the new Pope will choose?

What papal name would you like the new Pope to choose?

I'd like the new Pope to choose either "Bob" or "Fluffy". Solely for the lulz.

Probably Pius, Victor, or some variant of John or Paul.

I want Peter Cardinal Turkson as Pope Urban IX. Maybe then the euphemistic, politically correct press will call him the first urban Urban pope.

I'd love to see a revival of Innocent.

John XXIV, Paul VII, John Paul III, Pius XIII, Leo XIV would be my guesses....

I'd like John XXIV or perhaps Gregory XVII

I like this.

If Cardinal Arinze becomes pope, he should Clement XV. I had a Nigerian uncle, now sadly deceased, who was named Clement.

I would be strongly opposed to a John Paul III.

I was never terribly enamored of 'John Paul' as a papal name anyway, though I understand the reasons for it, so I wouldn't want a John Paul III. I'd like to see some name that's lain fallow be revived. Urban, Innocent, Honorius, Julius, or maybe one of the (to modern ears) really odd ones from the first millennium.

Borrowing heavily from the plot of the novel Vicar of Christ, how about John Roberts as Pope Francis I?

Boniface X has a nice ring to it, as does Pelagius III.

Out of the names which could be realistic contenders, Innocent XIX would be my choice.

I want another John or another Leo.

Same thing I said a couple of years back, then. Smiley

Well, odds lines are already up and going. Smiley Vegas will have a good time with this. Looks like Pius, Peter, and John are early favorites. Ahh, the old days when it was an Italian who chose John, Paul, or Pius. There are odds lines opening on his nationality and age and probably whatever you'd even want to bet on.

Yeah, I like Leo - that's actually not bad. Franky? Nicky? Joe? Probably not. If it were me, I might consider one of those and get someone to coach me on how to talk like Marlon Brando. But I remember when The Godfather III got into all the papal intrigue - good movie.

There have been 23 popes named John (24 including an antipope).  However, there has been only one Mark, and none named Matthew or Luke.  Anybody know why?

The Twelve Disciples is also a wasteland of papal names, again with only John being used as a subsequent papal name.

I tried googling this and there are no credible sources to answer your very good question.

FTR, I'm up for Peter......it's been a while.

I would love for some of the more archaic names to be used. Maybe Sixtus? Leo or Clement would be awesome as well.
