That implies anyone likes that movie to begin with. Tongue

I thought Inglorious Basterds was severely overrated for its true quality and that it was one of Tarantino's worst films, but I know I'm of the minority opinion in those regards.

What'd you think of the Christoph Walz character? Or the humorous scenes with Brad Pitt? That's what won the whole movie.

The most recent overrated movie I saw was Looper.  I guess it was OK, but how in the world did this get over 80 on Metacritic and over 90 on Rotten Tomatoes?

I tended to agree. It had a lot of great parts, but also had a pacing problem, and that resulted in it ending kind of anti-climatically.

Another movie that I don't think is too impressive especially consider to the directors' other works is The Big Lebowksi

Another movie that is not only overrated but actually quite terrible is The Boondock Saints.

I found A serious man thoroughly dull, uninteresting and despairingly pointless. I've no idea what others think about it though.

Tony, I hate to break it to you, but your opinion is wrong.

Anyway, as I've said before, it is the two Godfather movies for me.
Many teenagers say it changed their lives, few of them can say how.

Fair enough, but that doesn't take away from the movie itself. Just because people don't get a movie doesn't mean it didn't work and is overrated. I wouldn't expect many Americans to understand the point of Fight Club anyway, so the fact that it's popular despite that is quite a testament. That being said, even though the movie is almost the same as the book, it's a huge disappointment in comparison.

Yes both the movie and the book are terrible.

I hardly ever see movies in the theater, but I saw this one because it had such dazzling reviews. The idea behind it was clever and interesting. The execution of it was awful though. I expect it will be on TNT at least twice a week for the next decade Tongue

Donnie Darko. Seriously: Donnie Darko. I'm amazed no one has mentioned it so far. Having a bunch of mythology and references to the philosophy of time that are never explained in the movie don't make it "deep". They make it pretentious.

Exactly, they are.  Here are mine:

My #1 pick is Napoleon Dynamite, which is one of the worst movies I've ever seen, if not the very worst.  It's incredibly boring and incredibly stupid at the same time.  For most of the movie, I was trying to figure out what was going on, and we don't even find out if Pedro got elected class president.
Anyway, the second most overrated movie in my opinion was (big surprise) Finding Nemo.  The animation was the usual ugly, artificial CGI, it wasn't particularly interesting, and it was WAY too scary.  Of course, there is one traditionally animated film that I think is overrated too, and that was Fantasia  I don't remember much of it, but everybody knows the sorcerer Mickey segment ("The Sorcerer's Apprentice").  I'm surprised more parents never complained about that segment promoting Satanism and the occult.
Avatar was also horribly overrated.  Seriously, that was one of the most boring films I've ever seen (except Napoleon Dynamite, of course.)  The Pirates of the Caribbean series was also very overrated.  I only saw the first one when it was first released (I was about 9 or 10), but it was so boring that I now regret that I never walked out of it.  Just about every Pixar film outside the Toy Story series probably makes the list too.  Of course, there are many, many more.

And then there are the movies that are good but still don't deserve quite as much praise as they get, but that's for another time.

Enjoy being the subject of a dozen BRTD polls.

I think most movies generally - and certainly the hyped ones - made in the last 10-12 years or so are terrible.

I strongly disagree. I think the past ten or so years have produced excellent cinema, perhaps some of the best since the so called "golden age" of film in the 1970s. It just depends where you're looking I suppose.

Avatar was my first thought. I could come up with a more intresting and original plot in 10 minutes. But the people who said Signs are spot on as well. How anyone could like those two is beyond me.

The Dark Knight - ok, Heath Ledger did a good job and all, but come on...
The Dark Knight Rises (this one was just downright bad).

Casablanca. It was decent, but not at all the Holy Grail of movies that everybody pretends it to be.

Disagree, it's practically a heresy what you're saying, man Wink. The same thing for Citizen Kane, though it's not between my all time favourites.

As for movies mentioned by the people and that I've watched The Matrix and Bravehart are clear examples to me -although the latter is entertaining- but not the Sixth Sense. Maybe Inglorious Basterds as well. I didn't bother to see Fight Club, Avatar or Titanic so...

The Big Lebowski.

Such a f**king waste of time.  And the fact that guys sit around gushing over about how it was the greatest movie ever in the whole wide world really drives me crazy.  It was a stupid movie with a stupid message for a stupid audience.

All imho, of course.

I've only seen part of "Braveheart", but was not a huge fan of it by any stretch. Maybe if I'd paid more attention, but in any case, I didn't. As well, when looking into wikipedia, I found that there were some utterly unforgivable historical errors.

Avatar. It was just a rehash of Pocahontas with the native americans being played by blue people and John Smith casted as a cripple. What a waste of 3 hours and a waste of $2 billion worldwide.

The Matrix.  The Sixth Sense.  Fight Club.  Pretty much everything made in 1999.

I agree. While I enjoy those movies, they are not classics.

The Dark Knight and Lord of the Rings: Return of the King - Good, but worthy of being in the top ten on IMDb.com?

Some other good movies in the top 100 on IMDB.com that are nonetheless overrated IMHO:

Inception (probably my favorite movie of the past three years, but it is not one of the best movies ever)
Se7en
Memento
The Usual Suspects
Leon: The Professional
American History X
Django Unchained
The Pianist
WALL-E
The Green Mile
The Prestige
Requiem for a Dream
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

I like all of these films except Eternal Sunshine, but I do not consider any of them to be top 100 material other than Inception and probably The usual Suspects.

No, I don't remember the party.  Probably because I was bored out of my mind watching Napoloen Dynamite.

I don't think Avatar is that great, but there are plenty of Oscar nominees that are worse, It's just easy to pick on Avatar because it made so much money.
